Overview
Oversee summer program development and ensure high-quality delivery aligned with Brigadoon’s goals.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate within a team (Program Manager, Assistant Camp Director, Camper Care Director) to oversee the development and delivery of Brigadoon’s Camper Care philosophy, including, but not limited to :
- High level behaviour management
- Ensuring that camper development outcomes are being met through program design and delivery as well as through staff training / coaching
- Connecting with camper families in a warm, professional, and timely manner
- Lead response to emergency / crisis situations which take place during the camp season and develop emergency / crisis response plans where appropriate.
- Ensure that communication is taking place effectively between camp departments.
- Collaborate on camp resource development, including :
- Program Resources
- Staff Training Resources
- Camper Family Resources
- Camper and Personnel handbooks
- Oversee the completion of weekly camp session paperwork, as well as the management of that paperwork.
- In collaboration with Program Manager and Camp Registrar, oversee the camper application review process.
- Collaborate on end-of-season camp reporting and the delivery of stats and information to other stakeholders.
- Develop and communicate Brigadoon’s Program Philosophy, both internally and externally
- Ensure that policies and standards are being upheld from all relevant governing bodies, including CANSPEI and the Department of Environment.
Human Resource Management
Develop job descriptions, recruit, interview, and hire summer staff team of approximately 50 people annually.In collaboration with the Support Staff team, plan and deliver seasonal staff training in order to ensure that the team is well-prepared for Summer operations.Provide effective coaching / training, feedback, recognition, and professional development, including implementation of the performance review process to create highly motivated, high performing staff.Work with the Support Staff Team to ensure effective supervision of all other seasonal staff members.Oversee the recruitment, hiring, and training of Volunteers, Mental Health Support Team, and ASL Interpreters.In collaboration with the Administrative Coordinator, ensure that all relevant documentation is collected from personnel.Qualifications and Requirements
University Degree in Recreation, Social Sciences, Education, Administration, Child Psychology or Health Disciplines or other equivalent education or experience.A valid driver’s license and access to a vehicleA clear criminal record check with vulnerable sector check, as well as child abuse registry check, where appropriate (if a Nova Scotia resident)Standard First Aid and CPR-C (can be secured at the applicant’s expense after the time of hire)Demonstrated Experience in the following areas :At least two years of senior management experience in an overnight summer camp settingBehaviour and mental health support for children and youthProgram delivery and developmentStaff and volunteer managementExperience working with children and youth with specialized medical needs and complex behaviours considered an assetStrong skills in the following areas are essential :Strong organizational and time management skillsDelegation, workload management, and staff motivationResilience and stress management – ability to remain calm in high pressure situations and work effectively in a fast-paced environmentCollaboration and working well within a teamHigh initiative and ability to work independently to complete projectsProgram facilitation, development, and evaluation skillsExcellent communication skills – both written and verbalStrong emotional intelligence and ability to build rapport with children, youth, and adultsAbility to address large groups with confidenceProblem solving and troubleshooting a wide range of challenges with an innovative and flexible approachBehaviour management, group leadership, and mental health support for children and youthComputer literacy – must use Microsoft Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, SharePoint, etc., and our camp registration database software (CampBrain).
