Genome Canada is seeking an innovative and skilled Data Scientist in Residence for a two-year term opportunity. This role is designed for a dynamic professional who will immerse themselves in Genome Canada's data ecosystem to deliver expert analysis and actionable insights. The Data Scientist will focus on assessing the current ecosystem, analyzing ongoing projects and initiatives in genomic data storage and stewardship, identifying gaps and opportunities and recommending solutions for a sustainable future in genomic data stewardship in Canada.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • In collaboration with leading scientists and researchers, perform an in-depth analysis of the existing national and international genomics data landscape, including projects and initiatives involved in data storage, sharing and stewardship.
  • Engage with stakeholders and users to gain comprehensive insights into their efforts, challenges, and requirements in genomic data management.
  • Develop and propose strategies for sustainable genomic data stewardship, focusing on long-term solutions.
  • Collaborate with provincial and territorial entities, research institutions, and industry partners to advance data standardization and interoperability.
  • Lead projects to enhance genomic data infrastructure, ensuring compliance with international standards such as those set by the Global Alliance for Genomics and Health (GA4GH).
  • Advocate for and facilitate data governance improvements, including the creation of national data repositories.
  • Provide technical expertise on data management practices, high-performance computing, and cloud services.
  • Prepare and present detailed reports, policy briefs and strategic recommendations to senior management and external partners.
  • Demonstrate commitment to principles related to Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Accessibility and to Indigenous engagement in our missions and other activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Advanced degree in genomics, bioinformatics, data science, computer science or a related field. A Ph.D. is preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Extensive experience in managing and analyzing large genomic datasets.
  • Deep understanding of the Canadian research and data ecosystem, including data standards, interoperability issues, and data governance frameworks.
  • Experience with high-performance computing, data storage solutions, and cloud computing platforms.
  • Experience with related programming languages, bioinformatics tools and databases and statistical software.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to turn complex data issues into actionable insights.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience in multidisciplinary teams.
  • Familiarity with international data standards, best practices in genomics data management and data integrity.
  • Fluency in English is essential and French a strong asset
