Reporting to the CEO / President, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a strategic partner responsible for United Way British Columbia’s (UWBC) financial services, assets, resources and administration.
This role oversees accounting, payroll, donor services and office / building administration functions. As a key member of UWBC’s senior leadership team, the CFO will have a significant role in developing strategies, business plans and corporate budgets that result in the efficient utilization of financial resources while supporting vital community connections.
Translating UWBC’s strategic direction into outcomes, the CFO will play a key financial role with other interest holders and organizational priorities.
The CFO will demonstrate collaborative leadership, working closely with members of the team, organization and supporting and mentoring direct reports.
Responsibilities
Strategic Acumen : Ability to think critically, to analyze situations, understand environment and political implications and devise strategies and tactics to help attain our goal and objectives :
- Apply metrics and key performance indications to measure organizational effectiveness
- Leads and monitors the departmental annual business and operating plans and budgets to ensure goals and objectives are realized
- Works in collaboration with management on issues of strategic importance and on significant proposals.
- Provides financial leadership and vision for the organization
Finance : Expert level knowledge and experience with current practices related to budget planning, internal controls, financial reporting, payroll and capital planning
- Responsible for all internal and external reporting, audit, tax, budgeting and other reporting activities of the organization and its funds, including ensuring activities are carried out in an accurate and timely fashion.
- Presents financial statements and reports to the Finance Committee and the Board. Supports the governance process.
- Ensures payroll and benefits administration is well managed. Has primary responsibility for the pension plan.
- Ensures that the organization complies with all relevant legislation and related regulations.
- Identifies and manages risks.
Business Transformation : Ability to demonstrate donor / community service excellence across the organization through delivery of innovative processes, procedures and policies.
- Reviews gift and pledge processing policies and procedures to ensure operational efficiencies are achieved and donor expectations are met.
- Plans, directs, and coordinates UWBC financial budgeting and forecasting process
- Applies forecasting and monitoring tools that enable the organization to measure success and plan.
Relationship Management : Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Senior Leadership, Boards, Management and other partners at community, regional and Provincial levels.
- Experience engaging others, building consensus, delivering strategies, commons solutions and results with other partners.
- Engages at an executive level with the Board of Directors, Board Committees and external stakeholders.
- Communicates to Executive and board, finance and audit committees regarding any compliance issues
- Liaise with legal counsel as required.
Skills, Qualifications and Education / Experience :
- Bachelor’s degrees with a major in finance or business and a CPA in good standing.
- Minimum five years’ leadership experience demonstrated through progressive experience, ideally focused on not for profit.
- Exceptional communication skills to address concerns with tact and diplomacy. Excellent written, verbal and presentation skills.
- Strong knowledge of current Canadian legal operating context around investments.
- Experience with the Municipal Pension Plan (MPP) and working within a unionized environment would be an asset.

This is an Exempt role. This position is at $171,000.00 annually.
Candidates must live within 60 KMs (commuting distance) from our office as this position is currently a hybrid role and office attendance is required.
