Overview

As a member of the military, Signal Operators provide reliable wired and wireless communications and information systems using leading edge voice and data systems. They are part of a larger team that provides Army units and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) with communications and information services throughout Canada and around the world.

Signal Operators install, remove, troubleshoot, and operate communications and information systems technology such as :

• Wired and Wireless communications and information systems
• Radio, satellite, and microwave broadband systems
• Fibre optic and copper wire broadband technology
• Voice and data systems

Work environment

Signal Operators work outdoors, in military vehicles, and temporary shelters (e.g., tents). They serve across Canada and internationally wherever the CAF operates. Upon joining the Regular Force, after training, you will be assigned to a base, with potential relocations. In the Primary Reserve, you serve part-time at a local unit, with flexible postings, typically one night per week and some weekends.

Entry requirements

Training

Basic Military Qualification (Basic Training) at Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, lasts about 10 weeks. Signal Operators then attend the Canadian Forces School of Communication and Electronics in Kingston for approximately 19 weeks, learning about :

Advanced training and specialization courses are available, including cryptographic equipment, satellite systems, microwave communications, and leadership training.

Part-time options

Part-time service is available in the Primary Reserve across Canada, serving at local units, with training lasting 19 weeks, which can be modular. Reservists are paid, receive benefits, and can volunteer for deployments.
