The Opportunity:
The International Medical Assistant (IMA) role is designed for International Medical Graduates (IMGs) or internationally trained physicians who are actively pursuing medical licensure in North America. This position is ideal for individuals seeking hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of the Canadian healthcare system.
IMAs work under the direct supervision of a physician, functioning as a clinical technician and assistant, and serving as the physician’s “eyes and ears” in the examination room.
Compensation & Career Development:
Hourly Wage: $18.10 per hour, with additional performance-based bonuses tied to individual services.
Training Requirements: Successful completion of all required training milestones, exams, and certifications within the first three (3) weeks of employment.
Performance Review: Following a three (3)-month probationary period, IMAs are eligible for a formal performance review.
Specialty Training Opportunities: Upon successful completion of the performance review, IMAs may be eligible to train in one or more specialty programs, including but not limited to:
- Diabetes Program.
- Travel Medicine.
- Allergy Testing.
- Foot Care.
- Wellbaby Program.
Benefits:

- Benefits eligibility begins after six (6) months of continuous full-time employment.
What You'll Do:
International Medical Assistants (IMAs) are fully trained and responsible for supporting clinical and administrative operations to ensure high-quality, efficient patient care.
Clinical Responsibilities:
- Collaborate closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to deliver comprehensive patient care.
- Assist with patient triage, obtain medical histories, and perform limited physical examinations as appropriate.
- Accompany healthcare providers during patient visits and document encounters in real time.
- Accurately document patient histories, assessments, and treatment plans in the electronic medical record (EMR).
- Prepare, maintain, and update patient charts to ensure accuracy and completeness.
- Assist with order entry, including prescriptions, referrals, and diagnostic tests, as directed by the provider.
- Support healthcare providers during medical procedures, including wound care, suture removal, specimen collection, and minor surgical procedures.
- Provide post-procedure and post-operative care instructions to patients.
- For female IMAs: perform Pap examinations under supervision, including specimen collection and documentation, as permitted.
- Administrative & Operational Responsibilities
- Register patients accurately, including reception duties, scheduling, and payment collection.
- Schedule patient appointments, diagnostic tests, and procedures to optimize clinic workflow and minimize wait times.
- Coordinate referrals to specialists and follow up on patient care plans.
- Apply approved clinical scripts, scenarios, and protocols consistently while using the EMR system.
- Ensure exam rooms are fully stocked and maintain appropriate inventory levels through daily checks.
- Maintain a clean, quiet, and safe clinical environment by cleaning and sanitizing exam rooms, common areas, foyers, and restrooms.
- Perform basic IT troubleshooting as needed to support clinic operations.
- Teamwork & Professional Development
- Collaborate effectively with physicians, managers, medical assistants, and administrative staff to ensure seamless clinic operations.
- Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Perform other duties as required to support patient care and clinic needs.
What We're Looking For:
- Medical degree completed.
- Successful completion of the MCCQE Part I.
- Previous residency interviews in Canada or the United States considered an asset.
- Recent clinical medical experience within the past five (5) years considered an asset.
- Excellent English communication skills (verbal, written, reading, and comprehension) to effectively interact with patients, families, and healthcare professionals; additional languages are an asset.
- Permanent eligibility to work in Canada (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident), or possession of a valid work permit extending beyond 12 months (no sponsorship available).
- Minimum typing speed of 40 words per minute for data entry.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, clinical procedures, and patient care protocols.
- Proficiency with electronic medical record (EMR) systems and related clinical software.
- Basic IT skills and familiarity with computer systems.
