Responsibilities

Employment Requirements :

  • All TAGA's are required to be legally authorized to work in Canada, prior to the start of their contract and for the entire duration of their employment with the University.
  • It is the responsibility of the TAGA to obtain necessary work permits, including any extensions, (e.g., Social Insurance Number, proof of entitlement to work in Canada, etc.) and provide the verified forms to their recruiter, before their start date.
  • In addition, if the TAGA is not a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, the TAGA will need to submit proof of their entitlement to work in Canada, before their start date.
  • All successful candidates must be physically in Canada with the necessary paperwork to be able to work.
  • Orientation and Training : As a term and condition of employment NEW TAGA Assistant hires (first time TAGA hires, NOT first time in a given Faculty) will be required to undertake mandatory online training, which includes the following : Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA), Workplace Violence Prevention and Response, Access to Information and Protection of Privacy, Environmental Health and Safety, and Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
  • Assistants will be expected to complete the online training within two (2) weeks of their appointment date.

Responsibilities :

Preparation, lab / tutorial grading and other duties

  • Prepare for labs / tutorials in order to have a strong grasp of content, procedures and assignments
  • Grade lab / tutorial related assessments
  • Prepare lab / tutorial materials as needed
  • Other relevant duties as needed
  • Invigilation

  • Invigilate midterm and final exams
  • Lab supervision and facilitation

  • Set up experiments
  • Supervise and facilitate labs / tutorials
  • Proctor in lab tests, exams, and quizzes
  • Demonstrate and explain the use of equipment
  • Help students perform technical procedures
  • Help students perform and solve given lab / tutorial-related assignments
  • Assist students in project work in specified laboratories / tutorials
  • Contract hours per section for TAs

    Preparation, invigilation : up to 7 hours / term for first section only

    Preparation, lab / tutorial grading and other duties : 9 hours / term

    Lab supervision and facilitation : 24 hours / term

    40 estimated total hours of work for first section

    33 estimated total hours of work per section for any additional section of the same course

    Maximum Number of Registered Students per section 25. Enrollment numbers are subject to change.

  • Actual hours may vary at offer time dependent on qualifications, enrolment and determined rate of pay. Actual hours are also subject to change at the discretion of the university. Employees can work up to a maximum of 130 hours per term or 390 hours per academic year (can exceed 130 hours per term if hours per academic year do not exceed 390). Employees shall not be guaranteed work and when not on assignment they shall not receive any pay or payment in lieu of benefits.
  • Qualifications

    Education :

  • Preference is given to current Toronto Metropolitan University (TMU) graduate students in MASc or PhD
  • Other applicants will be considered if no qualified TMU graduate student is available
  • Experience :

    A strong research background and in-depth knowledge of the subject material is required.

    Relevant software / hardware experience in subject matter. Past TA / GA experience is an asset.

    January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2023

    Master - $47.06 per hour

    PhD - $50.82 per hour
