Overview :

MPI’s Legal and Compliance Division is looking for a lawyer with a minimum of five years of experience to join its Corporate Commercial team.

As in-house Counsel you will provide advice to the Corporation focused on corporate, commercial, procurement, property, privacy, and compliance law. This work involves :

  • Working directly with internal business units to provide timely legal advice.
  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating a wide variety of commercial contracts. These may include software and information technology agreements and licenses, consulting and other service agreements, sponsorship agreements, commercial leases, information sharing agreements, and memoranda of understanding with various government agencies and other stakeholders.
  • Drafting a wide variety of procurement-related documentation and providing procurement law advice at all stages of the procurement process.
  • Providing privacy and access law advice related to the Corporation’s information sharing agreements, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA) requests, related to corporate technology and business process change initiatives.
  • Providing advice and opinions on the drafting, interpretation and application of internal policies, directives, the law, and the Corporation’s compliance with them.

Responsibilities :

  • Analyze and handle complex issues of varying degrees of risk that impact the Corporation across all its lines of business.
  • Provide legal research, drafting, and negotiation expertise, advice, opinions, and solutions for a wide variety of issues.
  • Assist the Legal leadership team by coordinating projects and leading meetings, mentoring, and assisting junior lawyers, and providing input to improve departmental processes and procedures.
  • Qualifications :

  • A Bachelor of Laws or Juris Doctor degree from a recognized Canadian (or equivalent) law school.
  • Call to the Manitoba Bar, or eligibility to be Called to the Manitoba Bar.
  • A minimum of five years in the practice of law with experience in corporate commercial law.
  • Experience in procurement, privacy and access, compliance law, negotiations, or with information technology and software agreements is considered an asset.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, legal research skills, and an eye for detail.
