Position Summary

Rehab-Physio Assistant, Reactivation Acute Unit

Your goal in this position is to be responsible for independently carrying out prescribed rehabilitation therapy programs under the direction and supervision of an occupational or physical therapist. You will be performing administrative duties and cleaning equipment as required. You demonstrate excellent communication skills, and are able to communicate with patients and co-workers in a professional manner. You work effectively with supervising therapist, and also lead group sessions and motivate patients to participate. You work well in a physically demanding, fast-paced, and challenging environment. You have the ability to adapt to a changing workload and have great organizational skills. You are a critical thinker, and will prioritize and work in a collaborative inter-professional team setting. This position supports the Hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and / or transforming care through research and innovation. This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for staff, physicians, volunteers, learners, patients and families.

On a practical level, you will

  • Carry out exercise programs with patients on an individual or group basis and assist with gait training as prescribed by the physiotherapist
  • Carry out appropriate patient transfers and demonstrate safe lifting techniques and proper body mechanics to nursing staff and patients’ families as instructed by the therapist
  • Carry out ADL training with patients to facilitate independence as prescribed by the occupational therapist
  • Conduct occupational therapy activity groups under the supervision of an occupational therapist once or twice weekly
  • Assist patients in properly setting up strength training equipment
  • Record statistics

Qualifications

  • Diploma from an accredited community college Occupational Therapy Assistant / Physiotherapy Assistant (OTA / PTA) program
  • Experience in medical in-patient acute setting
  • Bilingualism in French / English an asset
