Applies advanced engineering concepts, practices, and procedures to analyze operational data / methods, identify performance improvement opportunities, and / or implement technology systems that meet business objectives. Serves as a subject matter expert and leader in various areas of engineering. Detailed summary in the areas of : AUTOMATION & SYSTEMS : Serves as a subject matter expert in system automation. Designs and supports specific material handling sortation systems, design specifications, Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) system integration for the most complex facilities. Analyzes vendor supplied equipment and leads testing of the most complex automated facilities. FACILITIES & MATERIAL HANDLING ENGINEERING : Serves as a subject matter expert in facilities and material handling equipment. Designs and supports the development of sites, buildings, offices, material handling systems, and sortation equipment for the most complex manual and automated sort facilities. Leads collaboration and makes recommendations to vendors and field maintenance departments on preventative and predictive maintenance efforts for material handling and automated sortation equipment. FACILITIES & MATERIAL HANDLING PROJECT MANAGEMENT : Plans, directs, controls, and implements engineering, construction, and start-up of FedEx FedEx sortation facilities and complex material handling systems. Manages and coordinates all activities to successfully meet the company’s plans and targets on capacity-related projects. INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER & PROCESS : Provides analysis, reporting tools, and engineering support for FedEx field operations to effectively control and / or justify operational costs. Leads the development of more effective metrics and tools. OPERATIONS RESEARCH, PLANNING & ANALYSIS : Serves as a subject matter expert on operation research and simulation technique. Develops and applies optimization, simulation, mathematical, statistical and data analytic techniques to research and develop tactical and strategic decision support system, network planning analysis, simulation models and solutions to improve company system performance, process, and network solutions. OPERATIONS TECHNOLOGY : Researches, designs, develops, deploys, and / or supports new and current technology solutions to improve performance and reduce operating costs independently. Leads and participates on significant complex cross-functional project teams responsible for implementing new technology. FACILITIES & MATERIAL HANDLING PROCUREMENT ENGINEERING : Plans and directs engineering procurement on key material handling system commodities that requires specific technical knowledge to procure for FedEx FedEx sortation facilities and material handling systems. Acts as lead on procurement of new technology and works with other groups to implement in the field. Manages and coordinates contracts and activities with suppliers and integrators to successfully meet the company’s plans and targets on capacity-related projects. OPERATIONS TECHNOLOGY SECURITY ENGINEERING : Serves as subject matter expert on security of all OT devices in the FedEx FedEx Network. Interfaces with IT, InfoSec, and Network Services on all OT Security initiatives. Drives OT Security process and procedures.

Essential Functions

  • Analyzes performance data within and outside of field of specialization. Evaluates and recommends procedures updates.
  • Analyzes and documents major operational areas for improvement. Identifies opportunities for improvement and recommends a strategic solution.
  • Researches and analyzes current state of technical or engineering information and predict future development opportunities. Creates strategic and tactical development plan and presents information to management.
  • Conducts financial analyses. Develops budgets for proposed major initiatives.
  • Formulates and presents document research, progress, and results to team members, internal customers, and senior management.
  • Applies project management fundamentals and concepts for multiple concurrent projects and / or multiple functional areas. Creates and publishes progress reports, meeting minutes, field communication memos, and presentations.
  • Participates in Control Self Monitoring (CSM) and / or Business Control Self-Assessment (BCSA) process within area of responsibility.
  • Mentors and develops critical skill sets in lower level engineers. Additional Essential Functions in the areas of : AUTOMATION & SYSTEMS :
  • Leads cross functional projects to develop efficient material handling systems and controls.
  • Supports PLC based automated systems (Allen Bradley) and reviews electrical drawings and panel designs.
  • Designs control systems and technical documents for automated facilities and hubs.
  • Creates bid packages for vendors to use when submitting proposals.
  • Evaluates sortation system operation; identifies and proposes material handling system improvements to increase capacity or improve efficiency of existing systems and processes.
  • Evaluates new and emerging technology in machine control systems software and hardware for application in future projects.
  • Provides engineering and technical expertise and support to vendors and facility maintenance staff in the resolution and prevention of control system problems and breakdowns. FACILITIES & MATERIAL HANDLING ENGINEERING :
  • Leads cross functional projects to develop more efficient material handling systems and facilities.
  • Applies engineering expertise to maintain and develop new design standards.
  • Designs material handling systems and technical documents for hubs and automated facilities (e.g., writes technical specifications, descriptions of operations, and cost estimates, creates equipment lists, and assembles final layout drawings).
  • Creates bid packages for vendors to use when submitting proposals.
  • Improves on-going preventative maintenance efforts for material handling system and makes recommendations for material handling system improvements.
  • Provides engineering expertise and support to vendors and maintenance staff in the resolution and prevention of material handling system problems and breakdowns.
  • Develops architecture, layout, and site designs of large scale facilities and hubs.
  • Evaluates new and emerging building products and components for use in future designs.
  • Ensures facility designs comply with applicable building codes and FedEx FedEx design standards and requirements. FACILITIES & MATERIAL HANDLING PROJECT MANAGEMENT :
  • Manages schedules, resources, and budgets on multiple facilities and material handling projects including, but not limited to, engineering design, scope of work, procurement, installation, start-up, training, maintenance, documentation, subcontracts, invoicing and all other project activities.
  • Leads a project team of varying disciplines (e.g., Field, management, PGH, IT) to execute a project.
  • Monitors and reports all aspects of a project consistent with the contract requirements.
  • Establishes project control procedures to attain established financial goals.
  • Develops contingency plans to mitigate schedule delays and budget increases for all projects.
  • Manages most complex and highest impact projects or programs.
  • Applies internal and external knowledge of specifications, plans, operations, and project management techniques.
  • Consults and provides expertise to various projects and process improvement initiatives. INDUSTRIAL ENGINEER & PROCESS :
  • Leads cross functional and / or cross operating company projects to perform root cause analysis on field metrics to enhance cost effectiveness in the field.
  • Develops strategies to improve standard service days, monitor service performance and implement plans for improvement.
  • Analyzes reports and data pertaining to field engineering performance (e.g., service performance, package quality, damage reduction, service performance, damage and loss claims).
  • Monitors reports on field engineering performance and identifies variances and trends.
  • Leads in the identification, creation, and documentation of business and / or technical requirements.
  • Collaborates and trains district staff on proper engineering of stations and tools to improve effectiveness.
  • Recommends and develops new metric or reporting tools. OPERATIONS RESEARCH, PLANNING & ANALYSIS :
  • Researches, designs, and develops tactical and strategic applications to support field operations.
  • Designs, develops, and maintains strategic network planning models to aid in long-term capacity planning process and short-term capacity shortfalls.
  • Conducts ad-hoc modeling requests by management. Quantifies operational impact of new business rules, operational policies, new initiatives / products to support decision-making process.
  • OPERATIONS TECHNOLOGY :
  • Leads cross functional and / or cross operating company project teams responsible for implementing technology.
  • Reviews and analyzes system design and architecture. Identifies and documents system requirements.
  • Identifies suppliers and / or technologies that meet requirements.
  • Manages tactical and strategic management of multiple key supplier relationships. Establishes and maintains relationships with suppliers to ensure continuous improvement in costs, services, and product quality.
  • Performs proof-of-concept and pilot tests.
  • Researches new technologies and / or monitors and evaluates existing technology for improvement opportunities to support technology life cycle.
  • Attends relevant conference / seminars to remain current on new and upcoming technology. FACILITIES & MATERIAL HANDLING PROCUREMENT ENGINEERING :
  • Develops procurement strategies on commodities in terms of financial and technical implication to the organization while providing technical knowledge of goods or services to be procured.
  • Leads and manages bidding process with suppliers to obtain quotations and contracts for products / services.
  • Lead regular performance review with suppliers to drive continuous improvements.
  • Explores and implements new technologies within FedEx FedEx
  • Researches and develops sources of supply for assigned technical commodities.
  • Develop, implement and drive the procurement strategies in order to meet cost savings targets.
  • Train, consult, and provide expertise on effective procurement processes and strategy.
  • Applies internal and external knowledge of plans, operations and project management techniques in relationship to our suppliers.
  • Negotiate with suppliers on lead-time, cost and quality so as to obtain the maximum benefit for the company.
  • Acts as a subject matter expert and liaison between vendors and customers on technical and highly specialized commodities.
  • Leads overall sourcing decisions based on knowledge of marker conditions, supplier base, and engineering requirement. OPERATIONS TECHNOLOGY SECURITY ENGINEERING :
  • Information Security (InfoSec) / IT Interface – Develops processes and procedures with InfoSec / IT to implement new devices on the FedEx Network. Develop / understands process with InfoSec / IT to help guide through approval process.
  • Inventory Management – Manages the inventory of all OT devices and keeps devices up to date with InfoSec standards. Defines OT device standards and administer user access to devices with log on privileges.
  • Network Security – Assist Network Services with testing and implementing Network Security initiatives. Interfaces with Network Services to define Network Security standards.
  • Patching – Develops procedures with IT patching team to test new patches on existing OT hardware (Windows, Linux, etc.). Investigates / corrects patching issues with InforSec / IT.
  • PLC Security – Maintain and Implement PLC Security. Evaluate and Update PLC firmware and hardware to protect from new vulnerabilities. Stay abreast of new PLC Security vulnerabilities and Windows patching conflicts.
  • Asset Centre – Maintain and Coordinate Asset Centre Hardware and upgrades to Asset Centre Software.
  • 3rd Party Approval – Implement OT InfoSec / IT approval requirements. Works with InfoSec / IT to streamline approval process.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related technical or quantitative degree (e.g. mathematics) required; in addition to

    , high school diploma or GED and four (4) years experience in applicable technical area is accepted in lieu of degree. Preferred disciplines may be needed in the areas of : AUTOMATION & SYSTEMS :

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred; Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Civil Engineering, Engineering Technology, Architecture, or related field preferred; Master’s degree Mechanical or Civil Engineering preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related field preferred; Master’s degree Engineering or Business Administration preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Logistics, or related field preferred; Master’s degree in Engineering or Business Administration preferred.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering or related field preferred; Master’s degree in Engineering or Business Administration preferred.

  • Minimum Experience

  • Six (6) years experience required in technical area. Position requires approval from FedEx FedEx’s engineering officers and managing directors.
  • No required experience for AUTOMATION & SYSTEMS.
  • No required experience for FACILITIES & MATERIAL HANDLING ENGINEERING.
  • Experience with managing technical or construction projects preferred.
  • Expertise in business objects and database systems preferred.
  • Experience in Industrial Engineering preferred.
  • Experience with simulation software (e.g., Arena, AutoMod, Simio), programming language (e.g., Visual Basic, C+, Java), statistical software (e.g. SAS), data mining, mapping software (e.g. GIS), and optimization model preferred.
  • Experience with statistical analysis, network analysis, and / or financial analysis preferred.
  • Experience with managing technical projects and engineering preferred.
  • Experience with managing technical or construction projects preferred.
  • Experience with interconnected systems in a manufacturing environment preferred.
  • Experience with security and Industrial Control Systems (ICS) preferred.
  • Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Software skills, including use of Microsoft Office software and web-based applications.
  • Verbal and written communication skills necessary to communicate with all levels of management.
  • Presentation skills necessary to facilitate training and / or deliver informational sessions to groups and / or individuals.
  • Time management and organizational skills necessary to manage multiple projects, appropriately prioritize workload, plan for resources to meet deadlines and goals, and respond to day-to-day functional needs.

  • Working knowledge of PLC based automated systems, electrical and electronic test / troubleshooting systems, and motor control methods preferred.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD software preferred.

  • Knowledge of Critical Path Method (CPM) scheduling.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings.
  • Knowledge of concepts related to construction and / or machine design.
  • Working knowledge of statistical programming language (e.g., SAS).
  • Knowledge of multiple Industrial Engineering areas.
  • Knowledge of project management concepts and project lifecycle.
  • Knowledge of a procurement lifecycle.
  • Technical knowledge of goods or services to be procured.
  • Knowledge of supply chain management.
  • Knowledge of interconnected systems in a manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge of FedEx FedEx OT devices and security vulnerabilities.
