The Opportunity
UTS is looking for a Theatre Technician to support the school’s theatre and music productions, as well as other events that take place at the school’s Withrow Auditorium and the Jackman Theatre. In your role as Theatre Technician you will plan, organise, and perform technical duties to support activities in the school’s Theatre and Auditorium, and any other venues that may be used for public gatherings at UTS. A sense of humour and a calm demeanour are always helpful with roles where tensions can rise with the opening ‘swoosh’ of our velvet curtains. Some of the duties that you will take on include :
- Assisting in the safe operation and maintenance of theatre lighting, sound, rigging, video projection and related equipment and systems used in support of staging musical productions, drama productions, concerts, dance, school assemblies, meetings, and related events.
- Assisting with a variety of advance preparation for facility usage and will perform related additional duties as required and assigned, and assist needs of users under direction of the Department Coordinator for Drama / Music, or the Music Program Director, or other members of the school who are responsible for coordination of specific events.
- Providing special event AV support, including preparation, equipment operation, and reporting;
- Planning, organising and implementing the maintenance and operation of performance-related equipment at the theatre venues, including lights and lighting console, sound equipment, video projector, microphones, sound console, speakers, special effects equipment, rigging system, IT equipment and other technical systems used during events, rehearsals, concerts, performances, and academic events.
- Programming sound equipment, lighting equipment, video projector, IT equipment, rigging controls and other technical systems in advance of performances and productions.
- Troubleshooting and resolving problems with production equipment and the security of all equipment.
- Liaising with colleagues in the Music and Drama departments and coordinating activities between them, including scheduling of the facility.
- As required, in conjunction with and under the guidance of teaching staff
- assist in facilitating technical support for teaching sessions, carry out demonstrations during teaching sessions, and provide technical theatre advice and assistance for students and staff on major productions and academic projects.
- supervise students when working in the production and technical areas to ensure their work is done in a safe and appropriate manner.
- Utilize proper safety practices and procedures, and ensure all people in the theatre understand safety.
- Support training for the UTS student stage crew, and staff, as needed.
- Be on-site to supervise performances and deal with technical emergencies or issues as required.
- Liaise with special event organizers on behalf of UTS and other related services, as directed by the Director of Facilities &, HR Services;
- Serve as the technical representative for groups using the auditorium or theatre facilities
- Coordinate with production companies and other organizations using the facility to determine technical requirements in supporting the school community and teaching and learning.
- Perform other related duties as required to address theatre needs and changing theatre practices.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate for this position will be well-balanced, warm, and highly collaborative with strong interpersonal skills and an ability to interact well with students, teachers, and other colleagues, as well as technical staff. While immersed in the dramatic world, you are adept at avoiding interpersonal drama in staging complex events with professionalism.
If you are this person, you will have completed a College Diploma in Theatre Arts Technical Production or have the equivalent of education and experience. You will also have knowledge of :
Operational characteristics and techniques used in theatre production lighting, sound, projection and rigging equipment.Principles, methods, materials, equipment and tools used in theatre technical operations.Principles and practices of theatre sound engineering. A working knowledge of digital sound desks is advantageous.Principles and practices of stage lighting. A working knowledge of digital lighting desks is preferred.Methods and techniques in maintaining, installing, and repairing electrical and mechanical equipment used in stage- productions. (This does not extend to maintenance and repair where a licensed electrician is required.)Theatre pre-performance, performance, and post-performance activities.Basic principles of operational characteristics of computer hardware and software.An interest in the world of theatre and a good awareness of the industry and its workings.And be able to :
Set up, program and operate lighting, light and sound desk consoles.Ensure the safe technical operations of the theatre venues.Evaluate equipment needs and notify supervisor of need to repair or replace.Troubleshoot theatre equipment and computer problems.Utilise standard office equipment including computers and related software applications.Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with school personnel, teachers and students, and with those visiting the school, contacted in the course of work.Work on your own initiative and to solve problems.Work within the conditions outlined below, which must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.Operate in office, theatre, and stage environments, with exposure to noise, dust and electrical energy; work with machinery; work at heights on scaffolding and ladders.Have sufficient physical ability to work in an office setting and operate office equipment; work with and around equipment and machinery; perform physically demanding technical duties; walk, stand or sit for prolonged periods of time; moderate or light lifting and carrying; bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling.Working Conditions Start Date, Term-Hours and Compensation
This is a casual position unionized with United Steelworkers (USW). Working conditions follow the guidelines negotiated between UTS and USW
Start date : September 3,
Term : Renewable - September 3, to June 30,
Time Commitment : Approximately 10 hours per week / hours for the term of the contract.
