Job Summary

Our Learning and Development (L&D) team’s mission is to unleash core team members’ unique potential and positively impact Toptal’s business objectives through world-class learning opportunities, transformational experiences, and meaningful career progression. We are a team of expert Instructional Designers, certified Change Management Practitioners, Live Training Facilitators, and Learning Consultants ready to support Toptal’s business objectives, help teams grow and collaborate, and engage team members in their own individual development. We provide a sophisticated level of business and human insight with varying levels of effort and impact, depending on the challenge.

We are looking for a Learning Experience Designer with experience as an internal consultant and strengths in stakeholder management, project management, and instructional design. As a Learning Experience Designer, you are responsible for designing and developing engaging and effective learning experiences. You will manage multiple content development projects simultaneously, create concise and captivating training content, and utilize the ADDIE instructional design model. Leveraging exceptional stakeholder management and strong project management skills, you will act as an internal consultant across Toptal.

You will conduct training needs analyses to understand stakeholders’ problems, identify gaps and desired impact, and recommend the right learning experiences to bridge those gaps. Our Learning Experience Designers act not only as Instructional Designers but also as Learning Consultants and Project Managers, providing valuable insights and recommendations for effective learning strategies.

Responsibilities :

  • Collaborate with stakeholders and subject matter experts across the organization to identify learning objectives, learner needs, and desired outcomes for training initiatives.
  • Develop high-quality learning solutions, including eLearning, video and graphic supplements, virtual instructor-led training, job aids, and assessments.
  • Utilize instructional design principles and methodologies, including the ADDIE model, to create high-quality learning experiences with interactivity and assessments.
  • Conduct thorough research and analysis to develop accurate and relevant training content, working closely with SMEs to gather content and appropriately rewrite it for training purposes.
  • Write and edit eLearning and live virtual instructor-led training content, cross-functional presentations, project agreement documents, and regular project management communication.
  • Manage stakeholder and SME relationships with front-line managers and individual contributors, communicating clearly and often, mitigating risks, and setting expectations.
  • Maintain close working relationships across Toptal, including the Chief People Officer and senior leaders.
  • Manage multiple training development projects simultaneously, creating and adhering to project plans with clear milestones and actionable steps.
  • Support larger L&D programs with training development, interviews, and facilitation that contribute to a holistic learning solution.
  • Conduct training evaluation and assessment to measure the effectiveness and impact of training initiatives, with a particular focus on retention and reinforcement efforts.
  • Improve and enhance existing training materials based on learner feedback, industry best practices, and emerging technologies.

In the first week, expect to :

  • Onboard and integrate into Toptal.
  • Learn about Toptal services and our organizational structure, including each team’s focus and how they interact.
  • Begin meeting with key partners across the company.
  • In the first month, expect to :

  • Work within your team to understand priorities, history, and how we work.
  • Begin working with domain experts to design training and develop materials for new hires and existing team members.
  • Closely support senior L&D team members on business-critical projects, building your mastery of the Toptal business, processes, tools, and key topics.
  • Partner with the Senior Learning & Development Coordinator to understand the ins-and-outs of L&D processes and tools.
  • In the first three months, expect to :

  • Adapt eLearning modules based on learner feedback to ensure they are maximally effective.
  • Begin to drive relationships and learning projects, with close oversight of senior L&D team members.
  • Exercising discretion and independent judgment, work closely across L&D to understand and apply the high standards of the team in relation to training creation, graphic design, communication, and basic project and stakeholder management.
  • Have frequent interactions with our Chief People Officer and other senior members of the People team to inform your priorities and support your integration into Toptal.
  • In the first six months, expect to :

  • Create a strong base of L&D courses targeted both to onboarding new hires and to developing the skills of existing team members, covering the major technical, cultural, procedural, and leadership skills needed to be successful at Toptal.
  • Begin to build deep relationships with domain experts across the company.
  • Start to own relationships and learning projects, with less oversight of senior L&D team members.
  • In the first year, expect to :

  • Support Learning & Development’s ability to develop and implement cutting-edge, best-in-class learning experiences by owning programs.
  • Support scaling Learning & Development at Toptal as the organization continues to grow, ensuring our ability to develop top performers, and meet critical business objectives.
  • Qualifications and Job Requirements :

  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • 5-7 years of professional experience in a Learning & Development team with progressive responsibilities in remote learning and corporate learning environments.
  • 4-5 years of experience as an Instructional Designer at a business services company, technology company, or consulting company is required. This position requires a motivated individual with demonstrated business acumen.
  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with the ability to create concise, professional, and appealing eLearning and live virtual instructor-led training content, cross-functional presentations, project agreement documents, and regular project management communication.
  • Proficiency in instructional design models and methodologies, particularly ADDIE.
  • Familiarity with eLearning storyboarding and eLearning authoring tools, such as Articulate Rise 360, Adobe Captivate, Easygenerator, etc.
  • Intermediate project management skills with the ability to manage multiple programs concurrently, owning the end-to-end planning and execution of all L&D workstreams for individual projects including scoping to implementation.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, including relationship-building, expectation-setting, and risk mitigation.
  • Basic knowledge of change management and its application to learning and development; focusing on building awareness and desire with learners (e.g. WIIFM), and the importance of managers and sponsors.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with Subject Matter Experts in a globally dispersed remote environment.
  • Basic graphic design skills and experience creating multimedia content with tools like Canva and Vyond; a keen eye for design aesthetics.
