Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Specialist Occupational therapist to work in whitby community therapy team.

To be accountable in own area of clinical responsibility, ensuring the delivery of evidence based clinical interventions and practice for a specialist caseload in a variety of setting's

To follow the Occupational Therapy process / pathway with patients within standard operating procedures and contribute to care planning as a member of the multi-disciplinary team.

To continue to demonstrate specialist clinical skills in practice and provide support, training, and advice regarding the delivery of care in partnership with patients, relatives, staff, managers, and externally with other agencies.

Main duties of the job

  • To help people who have difficulties carrying out day-to-day activities because of a disability, illness, trauma, ageing, and a range of long-term conditions.
  • To support the Urgent Community Response service in Whitby, aiding prevention of unnecessary hospital admissions and facilitating early discharges from hospital. Also future opportunities to undertake duties in intermediate care once established.
  • To delegate intervention to the appropriate staff members to enable evidence-based patient care and promote patient flow.
  • Provide occupational therapy advice to other disciplines and provide training and competency support to the wider team.

Person specification

Qualifications and Knowledge

  • Diploma or Degree in Occupational Therapy
  • Full understanding/application of relevant clinical practice/standards/audit within identified clinical area
  • Specialist understanding of relevant clinical practice, standards and protocols within identified clinical area.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to the clinical area at a specialist level of care
  • Ability to effectively commute between the organisations various sites
  • Ability to manage daily operations and maintain a safe working environment
  • Previous experience working as a community based Occupational Therapist
  • Teaching qualification or equivalent presentation skills/training experience
  • Evidence of continuing learning and CPD

Experience

  • Experience of case load management within specialist service area, some of which may be complex
  • Evidence of continuing professional development (CPD) relevant to the clinical area at a specialist level of care
  • Working knowledge of Trust policies and procedures.

Skills

  • Effective inter-personal skills and experience in supervising and fieldwork education/mentorship
  • Able to demonstrate effective communication skills and work flexibly within the team/service
  • Good time management and organisational skills
  • Ability to motivate staff to embrace change
  • Working knowledge of Trust policies and procedures
  • Ability to manage daily operations and maintain a safe working environment
  • Previous experience working as a community based Occupational Therapist

Where operationally feasible the Trust supports agile working, there is an expectation of attendance of 1 day per week at a Trust site as a minimum operationally. Unless specifically stated in the advert that a role will have home as the base of work, all roles will have the option to work from a Trust base if remote working is not for you.

If required for the post the ability to commute within the Trusts geographical area with access to the appropriate means of transport would be essential.

On 1 July 2024, NHS England strengthened its commitment to supporting employees already working for the NHS who wish to embark upon an apprenticeship to aide career development.

To ensure these staff do not experience a detriment to their basic pay, the salary for duration of the apprenticeship will be consistent with their current pay or the rate paid to other apprentices, whichever is higher (subject to eligibility criteria)

This change supports exiting NHS employees to undertake a formal apprenticeship programme which, upon completion, would qualify them for a role where the evaluated pay band is the same or higher than the band of their current post.
