Role Responsibilities

Do you communicate well under stressful situations? Can you motivate a dynamic group of individuals? Are you able to function in a team environment while displaying independence? If so, a Wildfire Crew Coordinator position may be the right opportunity for you.

As a Wildfire Crew Coordinator, you will be responsible to communicate with local Indigenous groups on a regular basis in order to build and maintain a professional relationship between community contractors and the Government of Alberta. Through these relationships, you will assemble Wildland Fire Fighting crews when requested by the Duty Officer. Strong organizational, communication, and time management skills are required for this position.

This position reports directly to the Forest Officer responsible for the Firetack crew program in the Forest Area. The Wildfire Crew Coordinator primary role is to manage the nine Firetack contract crews based in the Forest Area and ensure they are ready for deployment at the start of shifts. The Wildfire crew coordinator will work closely with Indigenous communities building a collaborative positive workplace.

  • Maintain and update certification records of all contract fire fighters, provide updated certification lists to the contractors on a weekly basis.
  • Work closely with the local Duty Officer to fill crew requests.
  • Update day counts and locations of contract personnel daily for proper tracking of resources.
  • Conduct preparedness and fitness audits.
  • Review documentation and advise supervisor and contractor of personnel identified for future training & advancement, advise of personnel showing trends of poor performance.
  • Review and assist in investigating incidents involving Wildland Fire Fighting crews.
  • Assist other Operation and Prevention programs if/when available.
  • Complete work using several computer programs, such as Word, Excel, PDF, as well as several internal programs.
  • May be required to work during scheduled day of rest or be available on stand‑by.
  • Complete all operations in accordance with Departmental Standard Operating Procedures, Business Rules, and Health & Safety Acts and Regulations.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma
  • One (1) season of related experience. Experience in wildland firefighting is required.

All candidates must be 18 years of age or older as of March 1, 2026, or prior to their start date. Position start dates range from March 1 to April 30, 2026.

Equivalencies will be considered and candidates with lesser qualifications may be considered at a lower classification and salary. Directly related experience or education may be considered on the basis of one year of experience for one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience.

Assets

  • Knowledge of the Wildfire Management program, policies, and standard operating procedures.
  • Forestry-related courses or equivalent education considered an asset.
  • Emergency response or public safety operations related experience.
  • Leadership in high-risk or dynamic operational environments.
  • Experience managing operational documentation, logs, reports, and safety forms.
  • Ability to lead and supervise teams in high-risk or dynamic operational environments.

Additional Requirements

  • Be able to pass the Fireline Support Fitness Standard: Walk 1.6 km (1 mile) in 16 minutes.
  • A valid, unrestricted Alberta Class 5 Driver’s Licence, or equivalent.
  • A minimum 3‑year Driver's Abstract, showing seven (7) demerits or less (obtained within 30 days of your commencement date).

What We Offer

  • Wage employees receive 11.6% in addition to regular wage earnings in lieu of paid holidays and vacation leave: 5.6 % of regular wage earnings instead of paid holidays; 6 % of regular wage earnings instead of annual vacation pay.
  • Shift differential and opportunity to work overtime, evening, and weekend shifts.

About Your Work Environment

  • Seasonal wage Wildfire Crew Coordinator positions with weekly hours up to 36.25. May require evenings and weekends to meet wildfire season operational needs.
  • Successful candidates will be provided with training.
  • The estimated term of employment is 3 to 8 months during the wildfire season, anticipated between February 2026 and October 31, 2026.
