Thompson Construction Group is seeking an experienced Human Resources Manager to provide strategic and operational leadership across the organization. Reporting to senior leadership, this role oversees the delivery of HR programs and services while leading a team responsible for talent acquisition, workforce development, and employee experience.
The Human Resources Manager is a trusted partner to operations and leadership, supporting a dynamic, multi-site workforce. This role drives consistency, compliance, and continuous improvement across all aspects of the employee lifecycle while aligning people strategies with business objectives.
Responsibilities:
- Lead, coach, and develop the HR team to deliver consistent, high-quality HR services
- Oversee end-to-end HR programs across the employee lifecycle, ensuring alignment with company values and operational needs
- Act as the senior escalation point for complex employee relations issues, investigations, and performance management matters
- Partner with senior leaders on workforce planning, organizational design, succession planning, and talent strategy
- Provide strategic guidance on employment legislation, policy interpretation, risk management, and best practices
- Oversee recruitment strategies and workforce forecasting in collaboration with the Talent Acquisition team
- Lead learning, training, and workforce development initiatives that support operational and leadership capability
- Support compensation, performance management, and employee development frameworks aligned with business goals
- Oversee employee leaves, accommodations, and return-to-work programs
- Support organizational change initiatives, including growth, restructuring, and operational transitions
- Ensure compliance with provincial employment standards, human rights legislation, and internal governance requirements
- Lead the development, review, and implementation of HR policies, programs, and tools
- Analyze HR metrics and trends to support informed decision-making and continuous improvement
- Partner with Payroll, Finance, IT, and Operations to ensure effective people-related systems and processes
- Promote a professional, consistent, and positive employee experience across corporate and field environments
- Perform other related duties as required
Required Skills and Abilities:
- Proven leadership and people-management experience, including leading multi-functional HR teams
- Advanced knowledge of Canadian employment legislation, Alberta employment standards, and human rights legislation
- Demonstrated experience managing complex employee relations matters and workplace investigations
- Strong business acumen with the ability to align HR strategy to operational and financial objectives
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, with confidence partnering with senior leaders
- Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, operational environment
- High level of professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment
- Experience supporting multi-site, field-based, or industrial operations (construction, mining, oil & gas, or similar)
- Strong analytical skills, including the ability to interpret HR metrics and workforce trends
- Proficiency with HRIS platforms and Microsoft Office applications
Qualifications:
- Post-secondary education in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field
- Minimum 8 years of progressive Human Resources experience preferred
- CPHR designation (or actively working toward) strongly preferred
