Position : Thrift Store Clerk
Location : The Salvation Army Thrift Store, Wingham
Position Purpose : The Thrift Store Clerk provides service to customers, sorts incoming product, and assists in ongoing retail operations.
Accountabilities
Operations
- Greet and interact with customers and donors in a positive, friendly, and courteous manner.
- Contribute to meeting store sales targets; provide efficient, courteous customer service; use tact with difficult customers.
- Know product pricing and featured sale items; protect the integrity of all donated items.
- Maintain store opening and closing procedures as required.
- Complete customer transactions accurately, including cash and debit, with minimal voids, overages, or shortages.
- Adhere to store policy regarding cheques, credit cards, refunds, voids, and holds.
- Process donations by loading / unloading, sorting, packing, hanging, pricing, and storing merchandise.
- Respond to customer enquiries with knowledge of stock both in person and by phone.
- Monitor store security and maintain a safe environment for staff and customers.
- Assist with store layout and displays to attract customers; maintain a tidy and attractive store.
- Contribute to inventory control by retrieving, sorting, hanging, and pricing as directed.
- Assist with donation turnover and replenish inventory on the sales floor as directed.
- Handle merchandise safely and orderly; assist in stock rotation.
- Assist donors with contributions and unload donations, placing stock in appropriate locations.
- Ensure proper sorting and processing of all donated goods and price items per store policy.
- Work with volunteers as assigned and protect the integrity of all donated items in accordance with store policy.
Communications
Inform supervisor of all customer complaints, comments, and concerns regarding service, prices, or merchandise.Health and Safety
Contribute to the safety of staff and customers (e.g., keep exits clear, manage spills, address hazards).Maintain an attractive, organized, and safe store; restock shelves and clean as needed; rotate responsibilities including common areas.Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and the Salvation Army health and safety policies.Working Conditions
This is a permanent part-time position based on 15 hours per week with a schedule that may vary week to week and include weekdays and Saturdays.Additional hours may be required during busy periods or staffing shortages.Ability to stand for extended periods; lifting / moving 20 to 29 pounds may be required.Hours are set by the supervisor and flexibility is required.Normal hours : Thrift Store hours of operation, Monday to Saturday, 8 : 00 a.m. – 5 : 30 p.m., with a 30-minute unpaid meal break where applicable. Hours may be reviewed as required.
Education, Qualifications And Certifications
Completion of Secondary School or equivalent.Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.Experience And Skills
Minimum of three months of related experience.Cash handling experience; basic math skills; reading skills.Knowledge of lifting guidelines; experience with a cash register, debit / credit processing is an asset.Brand awareness is an asset; some related warehouse or goods distribution experience is an asset.Attention to detail, problem solving, and analytical skills; strong interpersonal and communication skills.Ability to work independently and as part of a team; maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgment.Willingness to undergo screening and background checks as required by The Salvation Army.Compensation
The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $18.76 per hour, with a maximum of $22.51. Placement within the range will reflect market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications.
