Job Title: Electrical Technologist

Job Description

The Electrical Technologist supports high-voltage and electrical testing activities in a world-class laboratory environment, performing hands-on installation, testing, and analysis of electrical apparatus and safety equipment. This role combines technical lab work with data analysis and reporting, contributing to transmission and distribution testing projects for customers across multiple disciplines, while adhering to rigorous quality and safety standards.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with the installation of laboratory equipment, test fixtures, and associated electrical apparatus to support high-voltage and other electrical tests.
  • Conduct high-current laboratory tests on safety equipment (PPE) and electrical apparatus such as switches, breakers, transformers, cables, and insulators.
  • Perform routine electrical tests, investigations, and technical studies for customers in one or more disciplines including mechanical, electrical, chemical, non-destructive evaluation, and material science.
  • Prepare test samples, complete job safety analyses, design and assemble custom test setups, and execute tests according to established procedures.
  • Assist the test lead in preparing detailed test plans and test log sheets to ensure accurate documentation of test parameters and results.
  • Adhere to established quality assurance protocols, including ISO 9001 or similar standards, throughout all testing and documentation activities.
  • Participate in the analysis of test results and data using standard software packages, interpreting findings and identifying anomalies or trends.
  • Write clear and concise test reports of a predominantly routine nature and complete data log sheets to document test outcomes and observations.
  • Ensure customer satisfaction by consistently following strong quality and safety practices in all aspects of work performed in the lab and facility.
  • Perform a variety of support tasks including shipping and receiving of test samples and equipment, calibration of instruments, housekeeping, inventory control, and basic maintenance of tools and test setups.
  • Carry out clerical duties such as word processing, maintaining filing systems, and organizing records related to tests, equipment, and projects.
  • Operate pumps, grinders, drill presses, motors, oscilloscopes, and other test and shop equipment as required for test preparation and execution.
  • Perform electrical testing such as HIPOT tests, withstanding voltage tests (AC/DC), partial discharge tests, insulator tests, heat cycling tests, impulse tests, and critical flash tests.
  • Support troubleshooting of test setups and equipment issues to ensure accurate and reliable test results.
  • Safely operate cranes, forklifts, and manlifts as needed to move equipment, samples, and test fixtures within the lab and facility.
  • Work at heights when required, following all safety procedures and regulations.
  • Collaborate with high-voltage and other specialized teams, including those working on underground cables, substations, nuclear generation, and transmission lines, to support cross-functional testing projects.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to support laboratory operations, project schedules, and customer requirements.

Essential Skills

  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical equipment, including transformers, cables, insulators, breakers, and related apparatus used in transmission and distribution systems.
  • Strong understanding of testing equipment and methods used for high-voltage and electrical testing, such as HIPOT, withstanding, partial discharge, insulator, heat cycling, impulse, and critical flash tests.
  • Ability to read and work with single line diagrams and control drawings relevant to electrical test setups and systems.
  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 or similar quality management systems and the ability to follow structured quality assurance protocols.
  • Hands-on experience working with electrical testing equipment and laboratory tools such as pumps, grinders, drill presses, motors, and oscilloscopes.
  • Capability to perform sample preparation, job safety analysis, custom test setup, and execution of tests in a laboratory environment.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and understanding of mechanical engineering concepts as they relate to test fixtures, equipment setup, and safe operation.
  • Proficiency in using standard software packages for data analysis, report writing, and documentation of test results.
  • Strong troubleshooting skills for identifying and resolving issues with test equipment, setups, and measurement results.
  • Ability to safely operate cranes, forklifts, and manlifts, and to work at heights in accordance with safety procedures.
  • Effective time management skills to balance multiple tests, documentation tasks, and operational duties within defined schedules.
  • Team-oriented mindset with the ability to collaborate closely with test leads, engineers, and other technical staff in a busy lab environment.
  • Continuous learning mindset and curiosity to engage with new testing methods, technologies, and cross-disciplinary projects.
  • Demonstrated initiative in taking ownership of tasks, improving processes, and supporting overall lab operations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Education in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline, is highly beneficial.
  • Experience with transmission and distribution testing environments, including underground cables, substations, nuclear generation, and transmission line-related projects.
  • Exposure to non-destructive evaluation and material science testing methods in a laboratory setting.
  • Crane Operator certification or documented training for safe crane operation in an industrial environment.
  • Manlift Operator certification or training for safe operation of manlifts in the lab and facility.
  • Working at Heights certification or equivalent training for performing tasks safely at elevation.
  • Forklift Operator certification or training for safe material handling and movement of equipment.
  • Experience with ISO-based quality systems and audits within a laboratory or industrial context.
  • Strong written communication skills for preparing clear test reports, data logs, and documentation.
  • Proven ability to maintain organized filing and record systems for test data, equipment records, and project documentation.
  • Positive references that specifically highlight continuous learning, curiosity, initiative, teamwork, and strong time management skills.

Work Environment
