At the Toronto Design Centre, our Product Development teams provide solutions to our customers through the design and development of AC-DC and DC-DC power supplies. This role combines component engineering and product safety responsibilities. In this role, you will:

  • Provide independent component engineering support for the Power Supply Design group, including component evaluation, preferred-part selection, component database maintenance, and sustaining support.
  • Support, coordinate, and manage product safety compliance and certification activities for AC-DC and DC-DC power supply products to applicable global approval standards and regulations.

Job Duties/Responsibilities

  • Evaluate design engineers' component requests and recommend existing or preferred components when technically appropriate.
  • For new components:
  • Extract and validate required parametric information.
  • Determine RoHS and other applicable compliance status.
  • Obtain supplementary technical and compliance information from component manufacturers.
  • Evaluate similarity and technical equivalency of components from proposed manufacturers.
  • Recommend technically suitable alternate manufacturers.
  • Apply corporate and site component selection rules.
  • Monitor component life cycle and provide reporting when required.
  • Guide design engineers in component selection to reduce unnecessary component proliferation and promote use of preferred parts.
  • Populate and maintain the MPS component database and site CAD component database, including accurate attributes, manufacturer data, supporting documentation, and preferred-part status.
  • Contribute to and maintain the preferred parts database.
  • Assign part numbers for custom electrical and mechanical components and assemblies and manage Approved Manufacturers Lists (AMLs).
  • Serve as a technical resource for sustaining issues involving electrical and electromechanical components.
  • Gather and analyze technical data, support root-cause investigations, and recommend corrective actions for component-related problems.
  • Work with Quality Engineering, Product Design, Manufacturing, off-site manufacturing locations, Purchasing and Supply Chain, component suppliers, and component engineers at other sites.
  • Support technical evaluation of proposed component changes and alternate components.

Product Safety and Regulatory Compliance

  • Serve as a technical advisor to internal organizations on product safety matters.
  • Conduct methodical safety reviews of regulated product designs at appropriate stages of development.
  • Review product designs and engineering changes for safety compliance and provide approval or recommendations within delegated authority.
  • Advise design teams on the identification and application of safety-critical components.
  • Provide guidance on applicable product safety standards, testing requirements, certification expectations, and agency interpretations.
  • Review circuit designs for safety-related considerations, including primary, secondary, ground, SELV, and TNV circuits.
  • Perform and coordinate product safety compliance testing involving electrical, thermal, fire, mechanical, and other applicable physical hazards.
  • Perform non-automated testing and evaluation of operating analog and digital circuitry using appropriate electronic measurement equipment.
  • Analyze test results, diagnose noncompliance or abnormal conditions, and work with design teams to resolve design or production issues.
  • Work with external compliance laboratories and service providers to obtain required international certifications and approvals such as CSA, UL, TUV.
  • Coordinate and facilitate the creation and revision of safety agency reports and certification files.
  • Coordinate safety agency witness testing and responses to agency inquiries.
  • Coordinate and host assigned site product safety compliance audits and support closure of resulting actions.
  • Maintain current knowledge of existing and developing product safety standards and related regulations.
  • Monitoring product certification expiry dates and updates is required.
  • Provide product safety information and technical support to customers, management, and other design functions throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Provide support to Product Marketing with responses to customer request on product safety related aspects.

Technical Skills and Knowledge

  • In-depth knowledge of active and passive electronic components used in electronic power converters.
  • Detailed knowledge of product safety, industry, and quality standards related to power supply products and components.
  • Strong understanding of analog and digital electronic circuits, component limitations, circuit behavior, and power electronics design principles.
  • Ability to identify primary, secondary, ground, SELV, and TNV circuits.
  • Strong knowledge of electronic measurement instruments and test techniques.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics, component specifications, standards, test reports, and agency certification documentation.
  • Ability to gather and analyze data, troubleshoot technical problems, and determine root cause.
  • Strong documentation, organization, and attention-to-detail skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with internal and external customers, suppliers, laboratories, and certification agencies.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Windows, Excel, and relevant CAD or component database software.
  • Ability to work independently, manage priorities, and exercise sound technical judgment.

Education / Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related discipline; or a three-year diploma in Electronics Engineering Technology with equivalent relevant experience. CET designation is preferred.
  • 5-8 years of progressive experience in component engineering, product safety or compliance, power electronics design or verification, or a related field.
  • Experience with AC-DC or DC-DC power conversion products or comparable electronic equipment.
  • Experience and knowledge of applicable product safety standards, including IEC/EN 62368-1, IEC/EN/UL 60601, and other standards applicable to assigned products.
  • Experience supporting product safety testing, external compliance laboratories, certification activities, agency reports, witness testing, or compliance audits.
  • Experience maintaining component or CAD databases, preferred-part information, and AMLs is preferred.
  • Good soldering skills on medium-density SMD and high-power boards and familiarity with environmental test chambers, thermal testing, temperature/humidity testing, and HALT are assets.
  • Proven technical documentation skills.

This position is an on-site role, with one flex day per week of remote work.
