MAKING AN IMPACT

As a senior member of the driven and passionate Communications team at the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS), the Senior Manager, Mission Communications, would focus primarily on developing and implementing communications strategies and plans that elevate our mission programs, drive revenue, and protect and enhance CCS’s reputation with donors and the public. Reporting to the Director, Strategic Communications, the Senior Manager is an experienced individual who excels at providing strategic counsel to business partners and driving forward multi-channel communications plans that deliver results. The Senior Manager has robust public relations experience, is highly collaborative, and is enthusiastic about guiding and supporting teams.

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING:

  • Drive the development, execution and evaluation of strategic communications plans to support the Mission, Information and Support Services, Advocacy and Research teams at CCS
  • Serve as a trusted advisor to the Mission, Information and Support Services, Advocacy and Research teams at CCS
  • Identify emerging communications needs and define key opportunities for improvement within the public narratives of CCS’s priority issues
  • Provide strategic communications and issues management counsel
  • Support provincial and federal advocacy activities through effective communications strategies
  • Support the Research team’s activities through effective communications strategies to increase the profile of research impact and help drive revenue
  • Support the Revenue Development team’s research communications needs by providing strategic oversight of processes and tools that enhance research storytelling capacity
  • Provide evaluation and recommendations to improve communications to meet quality standards and support/advance CCS’s positioning, reputation and brand
  • Identify, monitor and provide counsel to reply to issues, risks or crises related to the Mission, Information and Support Services, Advocacy and Research portfolios at CCS
  • Support with communications requests as appropriate
  • Develop tools, materials and collateral pieces to support CCS communications with key internal and external audiences and set the standard for high impact, high quality and on brand communications
  • Work with internal stakeholders including senior executives, fundraising and community staff to develop and implement communications tools to align narratives used to communicate on core CCS issues
  • Employ effective public engagement tools to shape the national discussion on CCS priorities
  • Aid teams to create compelling communications materials designed to build relevance and trust in CCS
  • Lead and mentor a team of effective & engaged communicators
  • Support the growth and development of 2-3 direct reports as well as indirect reports
  • Foster a high-performance culture that leverages the unique talents and strengths of each member while encouraging their growth and development.
  • Champion CCS as a hero in the face of cancer.
  • Contribute to our culture of diversity, inclusion, belonging and equity (DIBE) by ensuring that all staff feel represented, valued, and heard across all aspects of their identity, including gender, age, religion, ethnicity, nationality, race, and sexuality.
  • Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Post-second degree or diplomat in communications, public relations, political or social science, public health, journalism or related field.
  • At least 5-10 years of progressive experience in communications strategy, with focus advocacy, research or support service communications.
  • Knowledge of federal, regional and provincial government decision-making processes, regulatory and legislative processes and structures is essential, with broad knowledge of advocacy, lobbying, media relations and community engagement tactics
  • Extensive knowledge of research or science communications
  • Strong experience working in a team-based environment
  • Exceptional oral and written skills, including presentation skills
  • Superb organizational skills, project management and multi-tasking abilities
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build and sustain good relationships
  • Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative where required, while working under pressure with often changing deadlines
  • Strong customer service orientation and professionalism with proven ability to interact with diplomacy with colleagues, general public, media, government and health care stakeholders
  • A good understanding and knowledge of the spectrum of cancer control, health care and not for profit sectors
  • Strong attention to detail and negotiation skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft tools including PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams and SharePoint
  • Video production experience is an asset
  • Knowledge of the Canadian Cancer Society is an asset
  • Bilingualism (French/English) is highly preferred, with French being an asset due to the organization’s nationwide operations and the need for effective communication across various regions.
