Description de poste

CANEIL is continuing to expand its in-house electrical engineering team to support a growing portfolio of transmission, utility, industrial, and mission-critical infrastructure projects throughout Canada and the United States.

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer with a strong background in power system modeling and analysis. The successful candidate will lead and execute detailed power system studies using SKM PowerTools while supporting the design, evaluation, and optimization of complex electrical systems.

CANEIL offers flexible work arrangements, including remote, hybrid, and in-office options, depending on candidate location, project requirements, and team needs. Our primary offices are located in Edmonton, Alberta, and the Houston, Texas area.

POSITION SUMMARY

This position is intended for a seasoned power systems engineer who enjoys detailed technical modeling, solving complex electrical system challenges, and producing accurate, defensible study results.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and validating power system models, performing detailed system studies, preparing client-ready reports, and providing technical guidance to project teams and junior engineers.

A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience is required. Professional Engineers with 20 or more years of experience are strongly encouraged to apply, particularly those with specialized expertise or a demonstrated ability to lead complex power system studies.

Our clients generally require final system studies to be completed using SKM PowerTools. Extensive experience with comparable software may be considered equivalent, provided the candidate is capable of transitioning effectively to SKM.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, maintain, review, and validate detailed electrical system models using SKM PowerTools, including DAPPER, CAPTOR, Arc Flash, and other applicable modules.
  • Perform power system studies, including:
  • Short-circuit analysis;
  • Load flow analysis;
  • Arc flash hazard analysis;
  • Harmonic and power-quality studies;
  • Transient studies, where applicable.
  • Develop and review time-current characteristic curves and protective device coordination recommendations.
  • Perform arc flash hazard assessments in accordance with IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E, including incident-energy calculations, equipment labeling information, and PPE recommendations.
  • Review electrical one-line diagrams, equipment data sheets, relay information, utility data, and existing system documentation to establish accurate study models.
  • Identify incomplete, inconsistent, or missing system information and coordinate with clients and project teams to resolve data gaps.
  • Establish and document study assumptions, calculation methodologies, operating scenarios, and model limitations.
  • Prepare clear, technically defensible reports, one-line diagrams, model documentation, and recommendations for internal and client review.
  • Perform technical reviews and QA/QC of power system models, calculations, reports, and deliverables prepared by other team members.
  • Provide practical recommendations regarding equipment ratings, protective device settings, system configuration, arc flash mitigation, and overall system performance.
  • Present study findings and technical recommendations to clients, project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders.
  • Support project teams during design, commissioning, system modifications, and troubleshooting activities.
  • Assist with project scoping, level-of-effort estimates, schedules, proposals, and technical planning for power system study assignments.
  • Mentor junior and intermediate engineers in power system modeling, study methodology, technical documentation, and SKM PowerTools usage.
  • Remain current with applicable codes, standards, and industry practices and incorporate relevant updates into CANEIL’s study methods and deliverables.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, preferably with a focus on power systems.
  • Minimum of 10 years of relevant, hands-on experience in power system analysis, modeling, and study execution.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting heavy industrial, utility, transmission, generation, data center, or similarly complex electrical systems.
  • Advanced proficiency with SKM PowerTools, including model development, study execution, results interpretation, and report generation.
  • Extensive experience with short-circuit analysis, protective device coordination, arc flash studies, and load flow analysis.
  • Strong understanding of medium- and high-voltage electrical systems, protection systems, equipment ratings, and system operating configurations.
  • Working knowledge of applicable standards and codes, including IEEE 1584, NFPA 70E, NEC, IEEE, IEC, CSA, and relevant utility or industrial requirements.
  • Ability to interpret one-line diagrams, equipment nameplate information, protective device data, electrical design packages, and complex system documentation.
  • Strong analytical judgment and the ability to identify model inaccuracies, incomplete information, and technically unsuitable assumptions.
  • Excellent technical writing and communication skills, with demonstrated experience preparing client-ready engineering reports.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple studies, priorities, and project deadlines.
  • Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng.) in Canada or PE in the United States is preferred. Candidates eligible to obtain professional registration within a reasonable timeframe will also be considered.
  • Legally eligible to work in the country where the position is based.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with additional power system analysis software, such as ETAP, EasyPower, CYME, PSCAD, or similar platforms.
  • Experience with industrial, oil and gas, mining, data center, utility, transmission, or generation projects.
  • Experience modeling medium-voltage and high-voltage systems, large motors, generators, transformers, and complex protection schemes.
  • Knowledge of harmonic analysis, power quality, transient stability, and system dynamic performance.
  • Experience developing or reviewing protective relay settings.
  • Previous consulting experience or experience delivering multiple concurrent projects for external clients.
  • Experience leading technical studies and mentoring other engineers.
  • Experience supporting project proposals, study scoping, budgets, and schedules.

WHY JOIN CANEIL

  • Work on technically meaningful and high-impact power system projects for utility, industrial, energy, and mission-critical infrastructure clients.
  • Join an expanding in-house electrical engineering team with opportunities to influence technical practices, workflows, and future growth.
  • Work alongside experienced engineers, project managers, designers, and technical specialists in a collaborative multidisciplinary environment.
  • Take ownership of complex studies and provide recommendations that directly influence system safety, reliability, and performance.
  • Access flexible remote, hybrid, and in-office work arrangements, subject to project and team requirements.
  • Pursue full-time permanent or contract opportunities, depending on candidate qualifications and availability.
  • Receive support for continuing education, technical development, and professional licensure.
  • Gain exposure to a diverse portfolio of projects throughout Canada and the United States.
  • Contribute to the development and mentorship of CANEIL’s growing power systems engineering team.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS

  • The expected base salary range for this position is $120,000–$160,000 per year, based on experience, qualifications, professional designation, location, technical capabilities, and overall suitability for the role.
  • Candidates with significantly greater experience, specialized expertise, established client relationships, or a demonstrated record of leading complex power system studies may be considered above the stated range.
  • All candidates will be assessed individually and compensation will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
  • Contract compensation may also be considered for candidates engaged on a contract basis.
  • Comprehensive benefits for eligible full-time employees, including extended health care, dental coverage, paid vacation, and an employer-supported RRSP or retirement savings matching program, where applicable.
  • Flexible work arrangements, including remote, hybrid, and in-office options.
  • Professional development and continuing-education support.

We thank all applicants for their interest; however, only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.
