Are you an expert in short-form video storytelling and open to experimenting with new social-first formats to reach young and diverse audiences? CBC Toronto is looking for a producer of video.

The successful candidate will be a strategic thinker who puts audience needs at the centre of their decision-making, ensuring our video content across all platforms, including CBC’s owned and operated apps, YouTube and TikTok, connects our audiences to the news they need to know, the stories that affect their lives and the issues that resonate in their communities.

You are at the leading edge of changing audience consumption trends in the digital space. You have a deep understanding of major issues in the GTA and the cultural intelligence to identify how those issues affect the myriad of communities who live here.

You are a natural visual storyteller. You have strong writing skills that you harness to clearly focus a visual story for a variety of audiences. You embrace public engagement. You are as comfortable in breaking news situations as you are delivering an explainer for social platforms. You are curious, eager to learn and throw yourself headfirst into change, big or small. You take initiative, are collaborative and a great communicator. You use data to make decisions and stay on top of consumption patterns.

You have a background in daily, multiplatform journalism and are comfortable conceiving of, creating and packaging video content across platforms in a variety of formats and treatments. You have experience assigning and managing the work of others. You possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, are a strong planner and organizer, and are at ease with juggling multiple tasks and priorities at once.

The position requires full-time, on-site presence at the Toronto Broadcast Centre.

Key Responsibilities

  • Make quick editorial decisions under pressure in complex, time‑sensitive environments.
  • Work closely with teams to get breaking news to the audience quickly and cohesively.
  • Conceive, write, produce, vet and manage on-demand video content, including short-form vertical video.
  • Work with story teams to optimize, package and distribute content for CBC’s platforms as well as on TikTok, YouTube, etc.
  • Coordinate with producers, reporters, on-air staff, writers, editors, videographers and other staff members.
  • Flag trending stories to the assignment desk.
  • Identify platform trends and experiment with new vertical video storytelling formats.
  • Provide feedback and coaching to journalists to help them develop their skills and produce content of the highest quality.
  • Pull analytics from videos on social platforms and CBC.ca to create feedback reports.
  • Collaborate in station coverage plans.

We are looking for a candidate with the following

  • A university degree in journalism or equivalent.
  • A minimum of five years experience in digital/social media.
  • Proven writing, editing and vetting skills, and a knack for headlines and packaging.
  • Strong contributor of ideas, stories and treatments.
  • Demonstrated solid news judgment and a strong understanding of the CBC’s Journalistic Standards and Practices.
  • Deep knowledge of and connection to equity‑deserving communities across the GTA.
  • Comfort and fluency with a variety of digital analytic tools and metrics.
  • Experience pitching and developing stories with a clear focus for social audiences.
  • The ability to generate treatment ideas and angles for local stories that meet audience needs.
  • Knowledge of how to structure reporterless pieces and hone the focus for a social audience.
  • Skilled at editing with Avid Media Composer, Adobe Premiere Pro, or similar editing software.
  • Exceptional organizational skills.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, overtime and weekends, as required.

Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.

We thank all applicants for their interest, but only candidates selected for an interview will be contacted.

As part of our recruitment process, candidates who advance to the next step will be asked to complete a background check. This includes:

  • A mandatory Criminal record check.
  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.
