Role Overview

The Regional Director of Investments is a senior investment leader responsible for enabling regional growth, strengthening Investment Counsellor and client-facing business development efforts, and ensuring our team delivers high-quality investment management, fiduciary oversight, and regulatory compliance across the assigned portfolio/jurisdiction.

This role partners closely with Investment Counsellors, Market Leaders, other Regional Directors, and internal business partners to support growth objectives, deepen client relationships, improve sales effectiveness, and allow our team of professionals to deliver an exceptional client experience. The Regional Director of Investments brings technical investment expertise, strong judgment, and strategic leadership to help teams identify opportunities, prepare for prospect and client conversations, develop investment solutions, and execute business development strategies in a disciplined, compliant, and scalable way.

The role also provides guidance on regional performance, investment governance, portfolio oversight, reporting, change management, training, and strategic initiatives that support client, business, and enterprise priorities.

Key Accountabilities:

Business Development & Growth Enablement
  • Actively supports regional and market-level business development efforts by partnering with Investment Counsellors, Market Leaders, Relationship Managers, and other business partners to identify growth opportunities, strengthen referral activity, and improve prospect conversion.
  • Develops and maintains strong internal and external networks and referral sources to support growth across the assigned portfolio or jurisdiction.
  • Enhances the firm's presence in the marketplace by collaborating with internal experts and external partners to create integrated business development strategies.
  • Provides investment expertise and strategic input for prospecting, discovery, proposal development, client reviews, and new business opportunities.
  • Supports the delivery of compelling investment proposals, presentations, portfolio recommendations, and meeting materials for prospects and clients.
  • Facilitates senior investment expertise, portfolio positioning, fiduciary insight, or market perspective for prospect and client meetings where it is required.
  • Helps identify regional sales effectiveness gaps and partners with leaders and teams to develop practical action plans that support business results.
  • Provides coaching, tools, and training to help Investment Counsellors and client-facing team members communicate investment value propositions clearly and confidently.
  • Supports retention and growth by helping teams deepen client relationships, respond to complex client needs, and deliver a consistent, high-quality client experience.
Investment Leadership & Technical Expertise
  • Provides investment management, fiduciary expertise, and strategic leadership to Investment professionals within the assigned portfolio or jurisdiction.
  • Supports portfolio construction, mandate suitability, investment policy, risk/return trade-offs, market positioning, and fiduciary considerations.
  • Supports the development and implementation of investment strategies, model portfolios, and portfolio recommendations based on evaluation of risk, return, correlation, client objectives, and platform capabilities.
  • Provides guidance on equity and fixed income markets, tax-related investment considerations, fiduciary obligations, and the regulatory environment.
Regional Performance, Strategy & Execution
  • Monitors regional, market, team, and professional-level performance results and develops action plans to address gaps and improve outcomes.
  • Acts as a trusted advisor to senior leaders in making business decisions and implementing strategic initiatives.
  • Develops an expert understanding of business and market challenges, competitive dynamics, client needs, and growth barriers.
  • Leverages data, reporting, and business insights to identify trends, opportunities, risks, and recommendations.
  • Recommends business priorities, resource requirements, and execution roadmaps that support strategic growth, business effectiveness, and client outcomes.
  • Supports the execution of strategic initiatives in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Conducts independent analysis and assessment to resolve complex strategic, business, or investment-related issues.
Governance, Risk & Compliance
  • Ensures business development, investment recommendations, client support, and operational activities are delivered in alignment with risk, compliance, fiduciary, legal, regulatory, and ethical requirements.
  • Follows through on risk and compliance processes and policies to safeguard client assets, maintain privacy, act in clients' best interests, and support an effectively run function.
  • Acts as a key contact for internal and external stakeholder relationships, which may include regulators.
  • Provides specialized support for internal and external regulatory requirements, governance meetings, oversight processes, and approval guidelines.
  • Protects the Bank's assets and supports adherence to all applicable regulatory, legal, ethical, and policy requirements.
Reporting, Analytics & Business Insights
  • Defines business requirements for analytics and reporting to ensure data-driven insights inform business development, performance management, and strategic decision-making.
  • Reviews and produces where needed regular and ad hoc reports, dashboards, and analysis to monitor performance, identify opportunities, and support leadership decision-making.
  • Collects and analyzes performance data, mandate-level information, portfolio summaries, asset allocation targets, and other relevant business and investment information.
  • Breaks down complex business problems and uses data and insights to provide practical, action-oriented recommendations.
Change Management, Training & Enablement
  • Leads and supports change management initiatives, including readiness assessment, planning, stakeholder engagement, communication, execution, evaluation, and sustainment.
  • Oversees the design, development, and implementation of tools, training, frameworks, and communications required to deliver business results.
  • Identifies business needs and designs or delivers training programs to support investment professionals, client-facing teams, and regional leaders.
  • Leads communication strategies that positively influence behaviour, drive adoption, and improve consistency of messaging across teams.
  • Collaborates across BMO to align communications, tools, training, and business development support.
Stakeholder Leadership & Collaboration
  • Builds effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders and ensures alignment across teams.
  • Fosters strong internal and external networks and works across multiple teams to achieve business objectives.
  • Influences how teams and groups work together to support client outcomes, business growth, and operational effectiveness.
  • May consult to or serve on committees, task forces, governance forums, or strategic working groups.
  • Acts as a senior specialist resource across the enterprise and contributes thought leadership on investment, business development, and regional growth priorities.
Operational & Program Leadership
  • Leads or participates in the design, implementation, and management of core business and group processes.
  • Develops and manages business programs, evaluates effectiveness, considers industry trends, and recommends enhancements.
  • Leads or supports operational programs, vendor relationships, contract negotiations, and implementation of business solutions as required.
  • Performs sales and service support activities as required to meet client needs, maintain service levels, and support relationship retention and growth.
  • Broader work or accountabilities may be assigned as needed.

Qualifications:
  • CFA designation preferred.
  • Relevant Investment Management Experience (RIME) preferred.
  • Typically 9+ years of relevant experience and post-secondary degree in a related field of study, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • MBA or finance-related certification considered an asset.
  • Strong understanding of fiduciary responsibilities and their application to managed investment accounts.
  • Strong knowledge of equity and fixed income markets.
  • Understanding of tax-related issues affecting investments.
  • Knowledge of the applicable regulatory environment.
  • Demonstrated success supporting business development, client acquisition, referral growth, and sales enablement initiatives.
  • Proven ability to partner with Investment Counsellors and market leadership teams to drive growth, improve prospect conversion, and strengthen client retention.
  • Seasoned investment professional with credibility among investment professionals, client-facing teams, and senior leaders.
  • Strong commercial acumen with the ability to balance investment expertise, risk management, and growth objectives.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to translate complex investment concepts into clear, client-friendly messaging.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, influencing, and relationship management skills.
  • Demonstrated coaching and leadership capability.
  • Expert collaboration and cross-functional partnership skills.
  • Ability to manage ambiguity and navigate complex business, investment, and organizational issues.
  • Strong data-driven decision-making capability.
  • This role is eligible for a discretionary variable compensation award that considers business and individual performance.
  • Extensive travel (25%) within assigned region (Ontario and Atlantic).

Salary :

$116,400.00 - $166,400.00

Salaries will vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include a commission structure. Salaries for part-time roles will be pro-rated based on number of hours regularly worked. For commission roles, the salary listed above represents BMO Financial Group's expected target for the first year in this position.

BMO Financial Group's total compensation package will vary based on the pay type of the position and may include performance-based incentives, discretionary bonuses, as well as other perks and rewards.
