The Opportunity

Many companies are hiring people to use AI systems such as orchestrators and prompt engineers leveraging an AI system such as Claude Enterprise. That's not this role. This role is for the person keen on building those AI systems.

We're building an enterprise AI platform from the ground up — a model-agnostic infrastructure layer connecting our firm's data, documents, and business logic to large language models in ways that are safe, reliable, and repeatable. It is our internal AI operating system which every team at Mawer will come to depend on. We have only recently released this internal AI operating system and are looking for help to continue to build it out.

Duties and Responsibilities

What You'll Build

• Design the core platform — examples of specific work include building a “knowledge base” via LLM ingestion and retrieval within an asset manager context and expanding/honing the tools/capabilities available to our internal agents
• Build the integration layer connecting LLMs to internal data, documents, APIs, and business workflows
• Create reusable, Mawer-specific, patterns and templates to enable firm orchestrators
• Define standards for reliability, security, observability, evaluation, and governance
• Evaluate emerging frameworks and architectures, deciding what earns a place in our stack

Who You Are

You're a builder, not a consumer. You're excited by AI system design — the architecture, the trade-offs, the patterns — not just what AI can do when you point it at a problem. You want to understand how LLMs work at scale and how to make them dependable.

You have relentless focus. You pick a hard problem and don't let go until it's solved. You stay in flow until the solution comes together.

You operate with a start-up mindset inside a disciplined firm. You move fast, prototype ruthlessly, and iterate on feedback — but what ships to production is observable, secure, and maintainable. You're comfortable with ambiguity and turn early ideas into practical systems without waiting for a spec.

You learn at speed. The AI landscape shifts weekly. You get ahead, experiment, and bring back what works. You can evaluate a new framework honestly and decide whether it belongs in our stack.

You're a force multiplier. You build tooling, templates, and documentation that make everyone else better. You communicate clearly across technical and non-technical audiences.

Desired Qualifications

• Software engineering background — you've shipped production systems, not just prototypes
• Comfortable building services, APIs, data pipelines, and internal tools
• Exposure to LLM application patterns: RAG, vector databases, orchestration, agents, tool calling, embeddings, model evaluation
• Experience with cloud platforms, containers, CI/CD, observability, or security practices
• Financial services or investment management industry exposure
