Consumer Protection BC is looking for an Enforcement Inspector to join our team! If you are interested review the job description and apply online by uploading your cover letter and resume (in one document) and answering a few pre-screening questions in our application portal.

Day in the life:

After a few days of heads down work at home youre ready to collaborate in-person with colleagues and tackle a large complex complaint file involving a regulated business where the facts are not straightforward. Before making any recommendations you review the records identify gaps in the evidence and consider whether additional interviews or inspections are needed. You are focused on understanding what happened through evidence-based analysis applying the relevant legislation fairly and ensuring your work can support clear and defensible regulatory action.

Later in the day you connect with a business operator to explain their obligations and discuss next steps to address concerns identified during your investigation. You balance education and enforcement carefully recognizing when voluntary compliance may be appropriate and when the circumstances require the use of formal regulatory powers. To advance your investigation you issue an Inspection Order requiring the production of records and information including financial and other sensitive business records relevant to the the afternoon you conclude that another file warrants enforcement action. You prepare a comprehensive report summarizing the evidence legislative analysis and recommended next steps knowing that your work will be relied on to support the allegations in administrative hearings reconsiderations or judicial review proceedings.

As you close your laptop for the day you reflect on the balance this role requires: independence and collaboration education and enforcement sound judgment and care. It is meaningful work that helps protect consumers and supports a fair marketplace across BC.

Who you are:

  • An adaptable positive and collaborative regulatory or legal professional who is comfortable working independently.
  • A clear communicator who can explain complex legal requirements to businesses complainants witnesses colleagues and external partners.
  • A trusted analytical thinker who brings discretion fairness integrity and sound judgment to sensitive matters.

What you will be doing:

  • Conducting complex investigations involving regulated businesses across BC by reviewing records interviewing parties gathering evidence and documenting findings.
  • Exercising delegated statutory authority to compel the production of records and information including financial banking and other sensitive business records.
  • Analyzing evidence legislation policy and business practices to identify non-compliance assess risk and determine appropriate regulatory responses.
  • Working directly with businesses consumers legal counsel and other stakeholders on complex sensitive and often contentious matters.
  • Preparing evidence-based reports recommendations and materials that support enforcement action regulatory decision-making and related proceedings.

We are looking for people who have:

  • Experience conducting investigations or compliance-related work in a regulatory administrative or public sector environment
  • A diploma in legal studies or a law degree is considered an asset.
  • Strong ability to interpret and apply legislation policy and administrative law principles.
  • Experience writing documents that support formal decisions or legal proceedings.
  • Excellent judgment analytical thinking and written communication skills.
