About the job

The Ministry of the Attorney General, Legal Services Branch, Ministry of the Solicitor General, is seeking counsel with demonstrated experience in complex matters to provide representation, litigation support, and legal advice and opinions to ministry clients.

• Advising and representing ministry clients at all levels, including senior executives, and across the ministry's divisions in litigation before courts and administrative tribunals in a variety of matters including applications to the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario, police misconduct proceedings, appeals and applications to the Animal Care Review Board, coroner's inquests, various applications to the courts, including judicial reviews, and applications by provincial inmates seeking various relief.
• Providing written and oral legal opinions and advice to the divisions and branches of a diverse client ministry.
• Providing advice and legal assistance to support the operational, policy and legislative requirements of the ministry.
• Providing legal and strategic advice, developing litigation and resolution strategies, in complex matters including class proceedings.

Mandatory Requirements

• Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario.

Knowledge and Skills

• Demonstrated experience advising and representing clients in high-profile and complex litigation before courts and administrative tribunals in a variety of matters.
• Experience in civil litigation, representing defendants and in particular the Crown in defending claims arising in the Correctional Services context.
• Demonstrated experience in criminal prosecutions and related issues.
• Familiarity with relevant legislation, including the Human Rights Code, Coroners Act, Ministry of Correctional Services Act, Provincial Animal Welfare Services Act, Community Safety and Policing Act, Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act, Statutory Powers and Procedure Act, Judicial Review Procedure Act and the Public Service of Ontario Act.
• Demonstrated written and oral advocacy skills.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience with class proceedings in the public sector context.
• Demonstrated interpersonal skills and excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated strength as a collegial and resolution-oriented team player that can build strong and effective working relationships with client, colleagues, and other counsel.
