Job Description

Based in Western Canada for over 110 years, McElhanney offers innovative and practical engineering, surveying, mapping, planning, landscape architecture, and environmental services. As a 100% employee-owned and operated firm, with over 1,400 staff members in 31 locations, we are proud to offer qualified staff with shareholding options in our company. At McElhanney, we work in teams to build strong connections with our staff, clients, and local communities. Our employees enjoy working here because of our varied projects, high levels of autonomy, opportunities for career development, excellent total compensation and benefits package, and collaborating with a team of great professionals.

The Opportunity

Are you ready to take the next step in your career with a company that values both impactful work and quality of life? McElhanney is seeking a passionate and experienced Water & Wastewater Process Engineer to help shape the future of our expanding Water & Wastewater team.

This is more than just a technical role - it’s a chance to step into a key leadership position with the flexibility to work from one of our 30+ offices across Western Canada, while reporting to our Victoria team. As a privately owned and rapidly growing firm, we offer you the opportunity to help shape the direction of the practice, develop your career, and explore meaningful ownership opportunities.

In this role, you’ll bring technical excellence to projects that enhance drinking water systems and protect the environment through innovative wastewater solutions. You will work closely with local leaders and stakeholders to provide economical, practical, and sustainable solutions tailored to their unique needs. You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary and forward-thinking team committed to improving public health and environmental outcomes while fostering long‑term partnerships with the clients we serve.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Shaping our clients’ future water and wastewater systems by evaluating, selecting, and engineering process mechanical solutions for water and wastewater infrastructure.
  • Turning concepts into reality by developing innovative designs through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
  • Keeping abreast of new technologies and methodologies to ensure we work on exciting projects and keep our competitive advantage.
  • Getting into the details by preparing and reviewing documents in various project phases including equipment sizing, facility layouts, mass balance, hydraulic analysis, diagrams and details.
  • Collaborate across disciplines to coordinate electrical, mechanical, structural, civil and other teams to ensure smooth project delivery.
  • Building our business by preparing effective proposals, liaising with clients, and finding opportunities to leverage our inter‑disciplinary teams to provide value‑added services.
  • Mentoring the next generation of junior technical and professional staff.

What You'll Bring

  • A desire to work on a variety of projects—from rural upgrades to complex urban systems.
  • 10+ years of experience in rural and urban water and wastewater infrastructure including treatment facilities with strong knowledge of process mechanical systems.
  • Registration in good standing as a Professional Engineer (PEng) in Alberta or British Columbia, or eligibility to obtain immediately.
  • Experience with relevant Provincial standards, regulations, and approval processes for all types of utilities and water/wastewater facilities.
  • Experience with business development, proposal writing, and winning new projects.
  • Experience with multi‑disciplinary team project delivery, as well as alternative delivery models.
  • Successful track record of maintaining satisfied clients and pursuing infrastructure projects.
  • Understanding of Development Site Servicing Plan requirements and processes is an asset.
  • A commitment to safety, teamwork, and maintaining a respectful, inclusive workplace.

What Can We Offer You?

The base salary range for this position is $120,000 - $170,000 per annum. McElhanney offers fair compensation that is commensurate with the individual’s education, experience, skills, and professional qualifications. The posted base salary/wage range is representative of the required level of qualifications and experience for the position as noted in the job posting. The salary offered will be based on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

  • Work‑Life Harmony: Balance your personal and professional commitments. Flexible hours to fit your lifestyle.
  • Comprehensive Benefits: Maternity and parental leave top‑up program, health and dental coverage, RRSP matching, and Employee & Family Assistance Program.
  • Safe & Inclusive Workplace: A culture of respect and inclusion for all.
  • Compensation: Attractive total compensation package including a generous bonus plan and share ownership potential.
  • Professional Development: Reimbursement for dues, educational assistance, mentorship program, workshops, and committee involvement.
  • Career Progression: Support and mentorship to shape a career path that fits your goals.
  • Relocation Support: Financial assistance if applicable.
