POSITION SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Director, Office of I-IDEAS.

Contribute to raising and sustaining CHEO’s level of Indigenous Cultural Awareness by:

  • Consulting, informing, and advising CHEO staff on matters related to growing cultural competencies to work better with Indigenous children, youth, families, communities, to ensure a culturally safe and affirming work environment and care delivery;
  • Building an inventory of offerings consulting with other key community and/or internal community groups to identify, develop and deliver educational or awareness building offerings;
  • Research legal obligations, Human Rights, Constitutional Rights, Jordan’s Principle and recommend ways to apply and measure compliance etc.

Leads corporate I-IDEAS projects and initiatives from conception to implementation by:

  • Participating in and/or facilitating advisory committees, consultation groups and conversations to ensure CHEO is considering and incorporating recommendations, lived experiences and concerns from Indigenous communities
  • Researching and analyzing policies, data, issues, reports, develop appropriate solutions and formulate recommendations as it relates to the delivery of services and programs;
  • Managing concurrent, complex, and often sensitive projects, and bring projects to completion on time and within budget;
  • Preparing reports for management, and making recommendations to facilitate strategic decision making, as required.

Contributes to the overall effectiveness of CHEO’s I-IDEAS work by:

  • Engaging in conversations, creative problem-solving and raising critical issues and areas requiring attention and;
  • Exercising diplomacy and tact when aligning to and addressing needs of communities with organizational priorities and constraints;
  • Representing the Office at and reporting back from the external and internal tables, conferences, training, and other events to share best practices, build relationships and contribute to solution building.
  • Perform work in accordance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations and all CHEO corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to Occupational Health and Safety;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Criminal Record Check (Level 1) and remain compliant (Essential)
  • Completion of a 4-year university degree in Indigenous Studies, Humanities, Social Sciences, or a related area or equivalent experience (5 years) in leading and developing I-IDEAS policies and programs in a professional capacity (Essential)
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience directly related to the development and implementation of I-IDEAS policies and programs, data analysis and management, community engagement, and I-IDEAS awareness building and training programs (Essential)
  • Office and clerical skills (Essential) Demonstrated accuracy and attention to detail (Essential)
  • Flexible approach to work demands (Essential)
  • Demonstrated initiative and ability to adjust priorities. (Essential)
  • Importance and benefits of Indigeneity, inclusion, diversity, equity, access and social justice in the workplace (Essential)
  • Communicate effectively and persuasively, both orally and in writing (essential)

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bilingualism in English and French (Preferred)
  • Lived experience and perspective of Indigeneity (Preferred)
  • Experience in government, healthcare organizations or complex community-based organizations are an asset (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of SAP (Preferred)
  • Interpret and advise on Reconciliation, Ontario Human Rights Code, Canadian Human Rights Act, Constitutional Rights, and related legislation (Preferred)
  • Current related practices, trends, and thinking/approach of Indigenous Health Equity in other organizations (Preferred)
  • Community development, capacity building and inclusive public engagement theory, concepts, and practice (Preferred)
  • Working knowledge of applicable occupational health and safety legislation; general knowledge of corporate/departmental policies and procedures related to health and safety (Preferred)
  • Challenges facing Indigenous groups in accessing employment and health services (Preferred)
  • Advanced research, statistical analysis and report writing techniques and processes (Preferred)
  • Project management/program development and program evaluation (Preferred)
  • Policy research and analysis (Preferred)
  • Strategic communications, negotiating (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of applicable health and safety legislation, including the rights and duties of workers (preferred) Plan, develop, organize, and implement short- and long-term projects and strategies within an environment of frequently changing priorities (Preferred)
  • Research, write and report on areas using a variety of methodologies (Preferred)
  • Display sensitivity and commitment to advancing Indigeneity, human rights and equity and diversity (Preferred)

This assignment may be extended or shortened based on operational needs.

Effective March 29, 2021, CHEO will conduct a more comprehensive pre-screening and evaluation process. This process may include more varied and multidimensional testing such as a written test, practical exam, or other assessment.
