ABOUT WILLIAMS LAKE FIRST NATION (WLFN)



The Williams Lake First Nation (WLFN) or the Texelcemc (people of WLFN) have belonged to the Secwepemc (or Shuswap) Nation for over 6500 years. Today the WLFN community includes a growing population of over 800 registered members who live on reserve in Sugar Cane in nearby Williams Lake BC and across the globe.

We are Culturally Centered Future Focused. WLFN provides staff with an excellent benefits package RSP matching up to 8% 3 weeks vacation upon completion of probationary period and many other benefits.

POSITION

The Peer Recovery Support Worker is a community-based peer role designed to support WLFN members who are working toward recovery from substance use. Preference for this position will be provided to a WLFN member who has lived experience with recovery and is in a stable place in their own journey.

The main purpose of this role is to encourage support and help community members access existing recovery and wellness services. The Peer Worker helps reduce barriers builds trust and walks alongside individuals as they reconnect to supports. Peer Recovery Support worker will be reposting to the Health Manager.


Employment Type

Part time 6 month term position 8-12 hours per week.

Probation Period

3 months from the date of hire.

Education Required

  • None formal training is an asset but not required. Training for this position will be included in professional development plan.

Experience Required

  • Lived experience is required experience is an asset.

Overtime Status

Non-exempt.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES


  1. Build supportive respectful relationships with members who are working toward recovery.
  2. Share lived experience in a safe and appropriate wat to provide hope and encouragement.
  3. Encourage members to attend treatment counselling medical appointments support groups and cultural programming.
  4. Help arrange or provide transportation to appointments and recovery-related services.
  5. Help members complete basic forms or connect with band programs.
  6. Check in with members after treatment or during difficult periods to encourage continued engagement.
  7. Support connection to culture Elders and community events as part of recovery.
  8. Keep simple confidential notes about contacts and activities.
  9. Follow program guidelines and maintain respectful boundaries.
  10. Maintain open communications with the Williams Lake First Nation team.
  11. Supports the mission vision and values of Williams Lake First Nation.
  12. Contributes to the Williams Lake First Nations ongoing success by accomplishing other duties as required or assigned.

All staff are expected to be team oriented and maintain confidentiality of all information gained while working with the organization.


Knowledge


  • Lived experience with substance use recovery and a demonstrated period of personal stability.
  • Willingness to share experience appropriately to support others.
  • Strong listening skills and a non-judgmental attitude.
  • Reliable dependable and able to maintain confidentiality.
  • Class 5 Drivers License (or willingness to obtain one) is an asset.
  • First Aid/CPR is an asset but not required.
  • Knowledge of Williams Lake First Nation community traditions teachings culture protocols and practices.
  • Proficient use of information technologies (computers mobile devices etc.) including Microsoft Office Suite presentation development tools online education programs and social media channels.
