Overview: The Practicum Advisor (PA) position is largely focused on connecting the learning in EDBE 8D01, the foundational courses associated with year 1, to the field of practice by supporting the development of teacher candidates as culturally responsive and competent practitioners. Practicum Advisors (PA) will implement curriculum and teaching approaches that engage students in conversations on educational inclusion and equity and pedagogy. PAs are expected to be aware of a variety of critical practices relevant to their field/subject area that can support all students, attend to unconscious biases (both self and teacher candidate), and encourage inclusivity.

Duties:

The duties and nominal hours for an Education Instructor – Practicum Advisor are established by the nominal workload includes scheduled contact time with students as well as non-contact may include collaboration with associate teachers and principals, meeting students in-person or on-line, marking / grading, attending program meetings and completing mandatory training as required.

• Become familiar with Brock University policies and adhere to them.
• Complete required Brock instructor’s online tutorial prior to first class.
• Complete required Gender and Sexual Violence supports for teacher candidates training.
• Use a provided Brock email address for all Brock-related communications with teacher candidates and program personnel.
• Collaborate and co-plan with co-advisor.
• Effectively deliver all aspects of the course.
• Manage instructional contact time and non-contact time according to the requirements outlined in the practicum advisor requirements and Log of Teaching Practice. Due to the nature of this course, flexible work hours are essential
• Adapt instructional and assessment strategies to accommodate diverse learning needs.
• Advise, mentor, and provide feedback to teacher candidates in relation to course concepts/content and Professional Standards of Practice and Ethical Standards of the OCT.
• Work collegially and collaboratively with other team instructors, course team lead(s) including attending team meetings and debriefings.
• Coach, mentor, and provide feedback to teacher candidates in Block 1 Practicum (EDBE 8P70) with reference to the Teacher Education Program Handbook.
• Respond to associate teacher’s correspondence in a timely manner.
• Liaise with associate teachers and principals when needed.
• Respond to associate teacher’s correspondence in a timely manner.
• Participate, as warranted, in the Department’s referral procedures as outlined in the Teacher Education Program Handbook.
• Evaluate teacher candidates during the practicum.
• Submit final grades by deadlines.

Qualifications:

• A minimum of 5 years teaching experience;
• Master’s degree or other recognized specialization in the field such as a 3-level specialization;
• Must hold an active membership in the Ontario College of Teachers
• Must be in good standing with the OCT at the time of appointment;
• Demonstrated leadership in curriculum and/or education;
• Exhibits contemporary knowledge of educational theory and pedagogy including assessment;
• Knowledge about social justice and equity through anti-racist and anti-oppressive lenses;
• Experience facilitating challenging conversations and difficult topics with adult learners.
• Experience with teacher candidates or other adult learners;
• Competency in using educational technology and platforms for content creation, course management and delivery.
