Position Overview

Under the provision of Shared Health - Emergency Response Services, the Adult Interfacility Transport Team will provide superior quality transport services for patients requiring advanced life support or critical care management to definitive care by way of air ambulance and/or ground transportation.

As a member of the Adult Interfacility Transport Team in collaboration with medical control, the Transport Nurse Clinician N3 (TNC) and Advanced Practice Respiratory Therapists (APRTs) are responsible for triaging, providing guidance to the referring facility, determining safest method of transportation, and delivering critical care support until patient care is relinquished to the accepting facility for critical care transport requests.

The Adult Interfacility Transport TNC is responsible for providing accessible, responsive, and integrated patient care at all times. They collaborate with health care providers, allied emergency service agencies, and other community agencies. This role is responsible for the safe, effective operation and use of vehicles and equipment as per Manitoba Provincial Regulations, Acts, and Shared Health policy.

The Adult Interfacility Transport TNC will be expected to conduct themselves professionally, ethically, and demonstrate commitment to the mission, vision, values, goals, objectives, and policies of Shared Health.

Experience

  • A minimum of 3 years equivalent experience as a critical care nurse with experience in Emergency Department, ICU and/or critical ground/air transport
  • A combination of related training and/or experience is preferred, including: Knowledge of and experience with aeromedical transport Experience using the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) Knowledge of labor and delivery or postpartum nursing care Working with individuals from diverse cultural, social and ethnic backgrounds Competent in an Indigenous language and/or knowledge of Indigenous customs, traditions and values Experience working in patient relations and/or in a customer service capacity Use of Shared Health ERS and Digital Health technology, software programs, and equipment Both official languages are essential for designated bilingual positions, to ensure health services are readily available and easily accessible in both official languages

Education (Degree/Diploma/Certificate)

  • Graduate of a nursing program held by an accredited Canadian education institution, or a College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) approved equivalent. Registered Nurse (RN) or Bachelor in Nursing (RNBN) (required)
  • BN preferred

Certification/Licensure/Registration

  • Active member and in good standing with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM)
  • Active participation in professional associations e.g. Association of Registered Nurses of Manitoba
  • Valid passport, with no restrictions to travel international
  • Valid Class V Manitoba driver’s license
  • Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) registration at Health Care Provider Level from an accredited training provider
  • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) provider status from an accredited training provider
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Provider (NRP) training from an accredited training provider
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) provider status from an accredited training provider
  • Trauma Nurse Core Corse (TNCC), International Trauma Life Support (ITLS) or PHTLS or ATLS from an accredited training provider
  • Completion of the Canadian Triage and Acuity Scale (CTAS) course
  • Canadian Aerospace Medicine and Aeromedical Attendant Association (CAMATA) Medical Training Course (preferred)

Qualifications and Skills

  • Must successfully complete Adult Interfacility Transport onboarding Curriculum (required)
  • Successful completion of an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) conducted by the Adult Interfacility Transport Team leadership and Medical Director (s) (required)
  • Intensive Care Unit/ Critical Care / Emergency Training (required)
  • Must Adhere to the Shared Health ERS scope of work

Knowledge of:

  • College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba (CRNM) standard of practice
  • Scope of Practice as documented in the Regulated Health Professions Act
  • Manitoba Emergency Medical Response and Stretcher Transportation Act
  • Manitoba Highway Traffic Act
  • Shared Health clinical protocols, care maps and associated documents
  • Personal Health Information Act (PHIA)
  • Other applicable Shared Health policies, procedures, guidelines, and directives

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to work safely without constant supervision on all vehicle types (ground, air, water), in diverse outdoor locations including in inclement weather, and maintain regular documentation using manual and digital systems.
  • Requires infrequent prolonged intense physical exertion, frequent heavy lifting over 20 kg, infrequent heavy lifting over 100 kg, and regular to constant bending, stretching, standing, sitting, walking, kneeling and couching.
  • Requires regular prolonged concentration in an environment with ongoing distractions.
  • Requires shift work on days, evenings, and weekends and on-call on rotation and may be required to work unscheduled overtime to maintain continuity of patient care.
  • Requires regular travel throughout Manitoba, infrequent travel outside Manitoba.
  • Regular exposure to allergens, high noise levels, aggressive/agitated patients/clients/residents, infectious diseases, blood and body fluids, and toxins; limited exposure to radioactive materials/radiation exposure above background levels. Nature of the work requires regular exposure to patients experiencing acute physical and mental illnesses and death.
