About the Company

Client is a portfolio company within a $42 billion hedge fund focused on mortgages. The engineering team is building a greenfield, AI-native internal platform to automate and transform core business processes, operating with the speed and culture of a Series A startup inside a large financial institution. The team has significant technology freedom and a mandate to be on the cutting edge of AI.

Role Context

This is a ground-zero build: no existing codebase, no legacy constraints. You will join a small, high-caliber team where every engineer is expected to own the full lifecycle of their work, from system design through deployment, observability, and on-call.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and build distributed, fault-tolerant backend systems from scratch using Python (FastAPI, Pydantic) and AWS.
• Integrate large language models (LLMs) into core product workflows, applying sound judgment on where deterministic vs. non-deterministic logic is appropriate — especially in financial transaction contexts.
• Own CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, observability, and incident response; there is no dedicated SRE or QA team.
• Write comprehensive automated tests; quality assurance is the responsibility of the individual engineer.
• Collaborate closely with infrastructure, data, and product engineers in a full-stack, blended-team environment.
• Contribute to architectural decisions and proactively surface improvements — this is not an order-taking role

Required Qualifications

• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, with deep expertise in Python (FastAPI, Pydantic, or equivalent modern stack).
• Demonstrated experience building and operating distributed, fault-tolerant systems with a correctness-first mindset.
• Hands-on experience integrating or building systems with large language models (LLMs), considered a near-hard requirement.
• Proficiency with AWS services (ECS, RDS, SQS, Lambda, and related tooling).
• Strong understanding of relational databases (PostgreSQL for OLTP) and OLAP data stores.
• Ability to own CI/CD, monitoring, and observability tooling end-to-end.
• Track record operating at the Senior+ or Staff level at a startup, scale-up, or top-tier tech company.

Nice to Have

• Experience with Go or Rust for performance-critical components.
• Background in financial services, fintech, or regulated industries.
• Familiarity with agentic AI development frameworks and production AI tooling (e.g., Cursor, Claude, Codex).
