The Quantity Surveyor supports the Commercial teams to protect project commercial interests by assisting cost control, contract administration, measurement and valuation of works, and change management. The role provides accurate revenue and cost forecasting, procurement support and commercial advice throughout the project lifecycle.

Main Responsibilities

• Prepare and maintain quantity take-offs, bills of quantities and cost plans from drawings, specifications and design documents.
• Measure and value completed works for interim valuations and final accounts; prepare payment applications and support timely client billing.
• Administer contracts and subcontract packages, including issuing variation notices, change orders and maintaining contract correspondence.
• Assess commercial impacts of design changes and site instructions; prepare change assessments and cost forecasts for review by Project Controls and Contract Management teams.
• Contribute to development and maintenance of project cost baselines (budget, estimate at completion and commitment tracking).
• Assist with process development and implementations.
• Develop relationships with subcontractors, construction and commercial management teams.
• Provide input to project estimates and proposals; validate unit rates, labour and material costs and resource assumptions.
• Work with Project Controls to ensure alignment between quantity measurement, cost reporting and schedule (e.g., progress versus earned value).
• Produce timely commercial reports and supporting documentation for management and clients (daily, weekly, monthly as required).
• Support dispute avoidance and resolution activities by maintaining accurate records and clear audit trails for contractual decisions.
• Maintain accurate cost and commercial records in company systems and comply with corporate and client policies and procedures.
• Mentor or assist junior commercial staff in measurement, valuation and contract administration tasks.
• Promote a safe, respectful workplace and comply with all site and corporate safety requirements.
• Any other duties assigned in support of the project’s commercial objectives.

Requirements

• Minimum 5–8 years’ experience in quantity surveying, cost management or commercial roles within construction, infrastructure or engineering projects.
• Tertiary qualification in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Commercial Management, or a related discipline is preferred.
• Strong understanding of standard construction contracts, contract administration and change control processes.
• Proven experience with measurement and valuation, preparing interim applications and final accounts.
• Experience with tendering and procurement procedures, subcontract management and variation management.
• Proficient in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); familiarity with cost and project controls systems (e.g., JD Edwards Enterprise, Primavera P6, ProjectWise) is an asset.
• Excellent numerical, analytical and attention-to-detail skills.
• Ability to negotiate the terrain of an in-process construction site, including climbing stairs and ladders, steep/ slippery terrain, walking, and working outdoors in all types of Edmonton weather and conditions
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications and schedules.
• Strong communication, negotiation and stakeholder management abilities.
• Ability to prioritize, multi-task and respond to changing deadlines.
• Commitment to confidentiality and high ethical standards.
