Job Summary
The Heavy Duty Equipment Technician 1st Year Apprentice supports the maintenance and repair of On- and Off-Highway Equipment while actively participating in our Goal Zero Safety Initiative. The apprentice will work under the supervision of Journeyman Technicians to learn diagnostic procedures, perform basic mechanical tasks, and develop foundational skills required for progression in the trade. The incumbent will show initiative, willingness to learn, and a commitment to safety and teamwork.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the maintenance, servicing, and inspection of equipment.
- Support senior technicians in diagnosing mechanical issues on heavy trucks and equipment.
- Perform basic repairs and component replacements under supervision.
- Assist with testing repaired equipment to ensure proper performance.
- Gain working knowledge of air brake systems, ABS, and DEF/DPF systems.
- Follow company policies, procedures, guidelines, and initiatives including Ethics, Goal Zero Safety, and core values of Safety, Growth, and Integrity.
- Positively participate in all safety meetings and comply with all safety requirements.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment.
- Report unsafe conditions, hazards, or incidents promptly to the supervisor.
- Demonstrate continuous effort to improve skills, streamline work processes, and support seamless customer service.
- Assist with mechanical repairs in both shop settings and road calls when requested.
- Complete accurate maintenance reports and documentation with guidance.
- Actively develop knowledge of evolving technologies and repair techniques.
- Perform other mechanical tasks as assigned.
Key Skills and Requirements:
- Mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn hydraulic, electrical, and diagnostic systems.
- Ability to follow instructions and work collaboratively in a diverse team environment.
- Strong communication skills in English, both verbal and written.
- Ability to work under pressure while maintaining attention to detail.
- Must meet all safety requirements including a valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, and pre-employment drug, alcohol, and medical testing.
- Positive attitude, strong work ethic, and commitment to completing apprenticeship training.
Experience/Education
- Registered or eligible to register as a Heavy Duty Equipment Technician Apprentice (1st Year).
- Previous mechanical experience, pre-apprenticeship training, or related trades experience is an asset but not required.
- Must have a valid Class 5 driver’s license; Class 1/3 with Air Endorsement is an asset.
Working Conditions
- Overtime may be required, including some weekends.
- Work may be performed both indoors and outdoors.
- Must be able to meet all safety requirements, including pre-employment checks.
