Job Title: Project Manager – Substation Construction
Job Description
The Project Manager is responsible for the safe, on-time, and cost-effective delivery of high-voltage substation construction projects ranging from small initiatives to multi-million-dollar programs. This role oversees multiple projects concurrently and holds full accountability for project scope, schedule, budget, and overall financial performance. The Project Manager collaborates closely with internal teams and utility clients, using strong communication, coordination, and problem-solving skills to ensure expectations are met or exceeded while continuously improving project delivery and the customer experience. Responsibilities
- Lead and manage multiple substation construction projects from initiation through planning, execution, monitoring, and closeout.
- Define and control project scope, budgets, schedules, and performance metrics in collaboration with leadership and key stakeholders.
- Develop detailed staffing plans and coordinate internal resources, including engineering, construction, and support teams, to meet project objectives.
- Manage subcontractors and suppliers, including selection, onboarding, coordination, and performance oversight to ensure quality and schedule adherence.
- Maintain accurate financial forecasts, including gross margin targets, cash flow reporting, and required funding documentation for each project.
- Monitor project costs, approve expenditures, and ensure accurate and timely billing and invoicing in accordance with contract terms.
- Administer and manage contracts, purchase orders, and change orders, ensuring all scope changes follow formal control processes and are properly documented.
- Oversee health, safety, and environmental aspects of each project, promoting a strong safety culture and addressing incidents or concerns promptly with clients and internal teams.
- Identify, assess, and manage project risks and issues, escalating conflicts or critical concerns as needed to ensure timely resolution.
- Lead and participate in key project meetings, including internal handoff meetings, project kickoffs, client reviews, progress updates, and project closeout sessions.
- Ensure all projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with quality standards, regulatory requirements, and contractual obligations.
- Collaborate with clients to understand expectations, provide regular updates, and maintain strong, professional relationships throughout the project lifecycle.
- Contribute to continuous improvement of project management processes, tools, and reporting to enhance overall project delivery and customer satisfaction.
- Work collaboratively with a pool of Project Managers to share best practices, support cross-functional initiatives, and align on portfolio-level priorities.
Essential Skills
- 10+ years of Project Management experience, with a strong track record of delivering complex construction projects.
- 5+ years of experience managing construction projects, with direct responsibility for scope, schedule, budget, and financial performance.
- Experience with substation construction projects, including familiarity with high-voltage environments and associated construction practices.
- High-voltage project experience, particularly within utility or power infrastructure settings.
- Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously, balancing priorities and resources across a portfolio of work.
- Proficiency with Primavera P6 for project scheduling, planning, and progress tracking.
- Experience in construction management, civil engineering, electrical engineering, or a closely related discipline.
- P. Eng designation (Professional Engineer) or equivalent professional engineering qualification.
- PMP certification (Project Management Professional) or equivalent project management credential.
- 5+ years of Journeyman-level experience in substation construction, demonstrating hands-on understanding of field activities and constraints.
- Experience working with a utility, including familiarity with utility standards, processes, and stakeholder expectations.
- Strong financial acumen with the ability to manage budgets, forecasts, margins, and cash flow.
- Demonstrated ability to manage contracts, purchase orders, and change orders using formal control processes.
- Proven ability to lead project meetings, communicate clearly with clients and internal teams, and produce concise, accurate project documentation.
- Strong risk management skills, including identification, analysis, mitigation planning, and escalation when necessary.
- Commitment to health, safety, and environmental best practices in a construction environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with estimation in a construction or utility project environment.
- Exposure to both civil and electrical engineering aspects of substation construction projects.
- Experience working on major utility projects and large-scale infrastructure programs.
- Ability to work effectively without direct reports while influencing cross-functional teams and subcontractors.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions under time and budget constraints.
- Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and maintain attention to detail across multiple projects.
- Comfort working in a growing organization that is expanding its project portfolio and investing in long-term capabilities.
- Interest in building a long-term career in high-voltage substation construction and utility infrastructure.
Work Environment
The role is based out of a new office located in Mississauga near Hurontario and Highway 401. The standard work week follows a hybrid model, with Monday through Thursday in the office and Friday as an optional work-from-home day. The Project Manager works within a team environment alongside a pool of approximately ten Project Managers, collaborating on a portfolio of utility and substation projects, though not all team members are aligned to the same region. This position does not include direct reports, and the Project Manager reports to a Director of Projects. The work environment emphasizes collaboration, professional growth, and exposure to significant high-voltage infrastructure projects. The organization offers stability through a strong long-term portfolio of ongoing work, including multiple recently awarded substation projects, and provides opportunities to take on substantial responsibility early, gain hands-on experience on major utility projects, and grow professionally as the company continues to scale.

Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $140000.00 - $170000.00/yr.
