Opportunity
The department of Access and Disability Resources within Student Affairs invites applications for a full-time, tenure track Learning Specialist, Professional Resource Faculty, commencing July 1, 2026, subject to final budgetary approval.
In this role, you will facilitate access to all aspects of the MacEwan University academic experience for students with disabilities. Some of your main responsibilities include providing support to students with disabilities by facilitating initial consultations with students, including conducting student functional-abilities assessment interviews, reviewing medical documentation, and will draw upon professional expertise and judgment, including the understanding of relevant legislation and institutional policy, to identify reasonable accommodations to develop an individualized Academic Accommodation and Service Plan. You will work alongside with instructors or others in the Faculty or School, as appropriate to identify the bona fide requirements of the course(s), and will work with instructors, staff and other service providers to implement the Academic Accommodation and Service Plan. You will be responsible for case management, including maintaining up-to-date and accurate notes, and, at times, will be required to navigate complex disability-related barriers.
Your role is to support students and collaborate with members of the university community by sharing information about barriers to full participation, including the duty to accommodate and universal design for learning principles, encouraging the design and implementation of an accessible learning environment and participates in initiatives to accomplish this goal. You will also have the opportunity to serve on departmental and University committees, participate in projects and initiatives, and engage in professional development activities.
Qualifications
- A minimum of a graduate degree in education, school psychology, counseling psychology, social work, occupational therapy, rehabilitation, or related fields.
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities, including mental health disabilities and neurodiverse adults or emerging adults.
- Experience reviewing medical and psycho-educational assessments.
- Experience conducting functional impact assessments.
- Experience working in a post-secondary environment.
- Experience working in an inter-disciplinary team environment.
Skills
- Strong understanding of relevant legislation, including the Alberta Human Rights Act.
- Strong understanding of evidence-based best practice approaches to meta-cognitive skills and learning strategies.
- Strong communication and presentation skills.
- Strong interviewing, problem solving, and conflict resolution skills.
- Working knowledge of assistive technology and implications for students in a university setting.
- Expertise in assisting students to problem-solve learning issues, with the ability to implement appropriate intervention for students, such as self-advocacy skill development, sharing learning strategies.
