At the University of Lethbridge, we’re seeking a Compliance Safety Officer who is energized by turning legislation into lived practice and who thrives at the intersection of people, policy, and purpose. If you’re curious about how safety systems shape workplaces—and brave enough to challenge the status quo when they don’t—this role offers space to make real impact.The Compliance Safety Officer plays a central advisory and leadership role within Facilities, working alongside managers, staff, contractors, and regulators to strengthen health and safety practices across a diverse and dynamic campus environment. Reporting to the Director of Facility Operations and Maintenance, this role acts as a trusted expert and mentor—supporting compliance with occupational health and safety legislation while actively shaping a resilient, proactive safety culture.You’ll translate complex regulatory requirements into practical guidance, oversee system-wide compliance efforts, and serve as a key liaison during audits and inspections. Just as importantly, you’ll influence how people think about safety—through education, coaching, and meaningful engagement—helping Facilities move beyond minimum standards toward best practices.What you’ll do
  • Evaluate and ensure compliance with provincial and federal OHS legislation, codes, and university safety policies
  • Develop, review, and implement codes of practice and safety procedures where gaps exist
  • Conduct inspections, audits, and incident investigations, including issuing stop‑work orders when required
  • Advise leaders, managers, and staff on health and safety risk mitigation and injury prevention
  • Coordinate contractor safety start‑ups and manage safety documentation and systems
  • Lead safety training initiatives, toolbox talks, and committee engagements

The University of Lethbridge is undertaking a job classification and compensation review for Administrative Professional Officer (APO) positions. As such, the salary range currently assigned for this position may be adjusted as a result of this project. Position Qualifications
  • 4 year degree, preferably in the Sciences or Engineering, or 2-year safety diploma.
  • CRST (Canadian Registered Safety Technician) or CRSP (Canadian Registered Safety Professional) Designation.
  • 2 years experience as a safety leader.
  • Experience of setting up and working with electronic safety document management systems is essential.
  • Working knowledge of the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act, Regulation and Code, Alberta Building Code, Alberta Fire Code, CSA electrical standards, as well as applicable federal health and safety acts, regulations and codes.
  • The successful candidate will be required to provide a satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
Starting Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE) $65,153.16 - $81,963.08 annually Full Salary Range (at 1.0 FTE) $65,153.16 - $98,772.99 annually (APO - Grade 3)
