DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :

As a member of the new Mental Health and Addictions (MHA) team in the Emergency Department (ED), the Unit Coordinator will report to the Manager, Emergency Mental Health and Addictions Services and collaborate closely with the Patient Care Manager, Emergency Department.

They will utilize nursing processes to lead an evidenced based, trauma informed approach to patient care while focusing on fostering a culture of inclusivity, harm reduction and compassion within the department. The Unit Coordinator will act in accordance with relevant legislations / standards while meeting the legal and ethical requirements of the nursing profession. They will oversee the brief assessment, care planning, transfer (within and outside the corporation) as well as discharge planning for MHA patients, in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team within the ED and MHA Programs. They will serve as the primary point of contact for patients, essential partners in care and team members within the ED. They will collaborate to ensure efficient workflow, excellent patient and family experiences, coordinate completion of core assessments (ex. RAI) and effective utilization of resources within the ED and MHA programs.

QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario (in good standing);
  • B.Sc.N and ACLS, preferred,
  • Current B.C.L.S. is required;
  • 3 years' experience in an Acute Mental Health and / or Addictions setting required;
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining Reflective Practice Standards as outlined by the CNO;
  • Completion of CPI Certification in Non Violent Crisis Intervention, preferred;
  • CNA Certification in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing and advanced psychiatric nursing experience related to crisis intervention is an asset
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Heath Act is required
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of evidenced based practice in substance use health is required
  • Ability to conduct brief Mental Health and Addictions assessments with excellent interviewing and communication skills;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community MHA resources as well as ability to provide patient / family MHA system navigation and support efficient utilization of department resources
  • Proven good attendance record with capabilities of maintaining this same standard.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT :

The terms and conditions of employment are in accordance with the Collective Agreement between the Hospital and the Ontario Nurses Association (RN Bargaining Unit Local 051).

Successful External applicants must provide a satisfactory Criminal Investigation Reference for the vulnerable sector, dated within the past six (6) months.
