Overview
Job Description : Mechanical Engineer – Gas Injection & Plasma Gun Systems
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer specializing in gas injection, high-speed valve systems, and plasma-gun mechanical integration. This engineer will design, prototype, and own the hardware responsible for delivering precise gas pulses to each plasma gun and to the central target chamber.
The ideal candidate is hands-on with high-pressure gases, transient flow hardware, fast-acting valves, mechanical integration, and robust system design for harsh physical environments.
This role is central to the repeatability, symmetry, and performance of the PJMIF testbed.
Key Responsibilities
- Design mechanical gas-delivery subsystems for plasma gun feedstock (argon, hydrogen, helium, etc.).
- Design and integrate manifolds, regulators, purifiers, and filtration hardware.
- Design high-pressure storage and distribution systems.
- Model transient flow behaviour, gas pulse shapes, fill dynamics, and density profiles.
Mechanical Integration with Plasma Guns
Design mounting, routing, and mechanical interfaces for multi-channel gas injection.Ensure mechanical alignment, thermal robustness, and reliability under repeated pulsed-power firing.Develop solutions for minimizing inductive or thermal interference from plasma guns.Build and test gas-injection prototypes, including full pneumatic assemblies.Measure and validate valve response time, flow precision, and pulse repeatability.Conduct environmental and durability tests (thermal, vibrational, and mechanical stress).Implement leak-check, purge, and contamination control procedures.Operational & Safety Systems
Develop operating procedures for high-pressure and specialty gases.Implement mechanical safety systems :
Pressure reliefIsolation valvesPurge pathsWork with controls engineers to integrate timing and actuation hardware.Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering.5+ years’ experience with high-pressure or high-speed gas systems, such as :
Pneumatic systemsIndustrial high-pressure gas hardwarePlasma or thermal spray injectorsHands-on proficiency with :

Mechanical design for vacuum chambers or differential-pressure environments.Experience with hydrogen systems and associated safety protocols.Exposure to CFD or transient flow modelling (not required).Experience integrating mechanical systems with high-voltage equipment.Soft Skills
Excellent cross-disciplinary communication (EE, controls, plasma, pulsed-power).Fast-learning, adaptable, and comfortable in a deep-tech startup environment.Strong ownership mentality with a bias toward building and testing quickly.Practical, systems-level thinker with strong prototyping and debugging skills.Compensation
Competitive salary + equity, commensurate with experience. Our client offers engineers the rare opportunity to influence the physical design of a first-of-its-kind fusion reactor system
