Job Summary

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive, client-centred primary health care to the diverse UBC student population in accordance with UBC Student Health Service (SHS) standards of practice and the British Columbia College of Nurses & Midwives (BCCNM) standards. Working collaboratively within an interprofessional model, the NP delivers care across a range of physical and mental health needs, supports students with complex conditions, and contributes to health promotion, outreach, education, and quality improvement initiatives.

The NP demonstrates clinical leadership, maintains and advances professional competence, participates in committees and approved research projects related to campus health and wellness, and integrates anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion principles into all aspects of care.

Organizational Status

Reports to the NP Lead, Associate Director (AD), UBC Student Health Service. Works closely with family physicians, specialists, nurses, clerical and administrative staff, and collaborates with campus partners including Counselling Services, Health Equity Promotion & Education, the Centre for Accessibility, and Student Support Services. The position is primarily based at Student Health Service, with some work at other campus locations.

Work Performed

  • Provides primary health care to students through in-person and virtual visits, working independently and as part of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Assesses, diagnoses, treats, and manages acute and chronic health conditions, including mental health concerns.
  • Makes and coordinates appropriate internal and external referrals and ensures continuity and follow-up of care.
  • Collaborates with Counselling Services, Wellness Advisers, and the Centre for Accessibility regarding shared clients and accommodations.
  • Participates in on-call rotation for urgent or emergent medically related calls outside regular clinic hours.
  • Collaborates with campus partners on health promotion, outreach, and educational programming.
  • Participates in care planning for students with complex health needs and in collaborative case discussions.
  • Contributes to planning, evaluation, research, and quality improvement initiatives related to student health services.
  • Participates in health-related committees and working groups.
  • Maintains accurate, timely clinical documentation related to patient visits.
  • Acts as a student advocate, promoting autonomy, dignity, privacy, respect, and access to information.
  • Maintains professional competence through continuing education in accordance with BCCNM requirements.

Consequence of Error/Judgement
Under the supervision of the Medical Director of SHS, this position is responsible for high quality care. Responsible for ensuring adherence to the standards of practice and patient care guidelines of UBC SHS. The result of failure to provide appropriate quality of care and referrals could result in serious harm to students with health conditions and legal accountability to the administrators of the University and/or damage to the due diligence reputation of the University.

Supervision Received
Works under the general supervision of the NP Lead, AD, and consults on complex or high-risk clinical matters. Collaborates with family physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, psychiatrists, and other specialists as required.

Supervision Given
May provide work direction or assignments to staff as required.
