Instructional Designer

Location: Surrey, BC
Duration: 6-Month Contract
Work Arrangement: Hybrid – 1 day onsite / 4 days remote

MatchBox Consulting Group is seeking an Instructional Designer to support one of British Columbia’s largest utility providers. This role will focus on the design and development of technical and operational training programs, working closely with Subject Matter Experts to translate complex information into practical, engaging, and user-friendly learning solutions.

The successful candidate will bring strong instructional design experience, a solid understanding of adult learning principles and the ADDIE model, and the ability to develop training for classroom, virtual, blended, and web-based environments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assess training needs and translate findings into effective learning solutions.
  • Design and develop curricula, course outlines, training modules, facilitator guides, instructional packages, and technical documentation.
  • Develop instructor-led, virtual instructor-led, blended, and web-based training content.
  • Collaborate with Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to gather technical information and develop accurate training materials.
  • Create learning objectives, performance measures, assessments, and evaluation tools.
  • Develop competency profiles, course profiles, and complex curriculum materials.
  • Write and edit technical training materials, procedures, work processes, manuals, and user-friendly documentation.
  • Develop digital learning assets, instructional videos, and web-based learning solutions.
  • Establish standardized curriculum formats, templates, and facilitator guides.
  • Adapt existing classroom training for virtual, remote, and blended delivery.
  • Apply adult education principles and learning methodologies throughout the instructional design process.
  • Manage and coordinate instructional design projects and curriculum development activities.
  • Support evaluation and assessment of training effectiveness.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to junior instructional designers.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 4 years of instructional design experience, or equivalent.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, English, or a related field; or a certificate/diploma in Instructional Design, Adult Education, or a related program.
  • Candidates without a bachelor’s degree should have approximately 6 years of relevant experience in addition to an applicable certificate or diploma.
  • Strong practical knowledge of adult learning principles and the ADDIE model.
  • Experience conducting formal training needs assessments.
  • Demonstrated experience developing curricula, facilitator guides, course materials, and technical documentation.
  • Experience developing instructor-led, virtual instructor-led, and/or web-based training.
  • Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and technical documentation skills.
  • Experience working collaboratively with SMEs.
  • Knowledge of evaluation and assessment methodologies.
  • Excellent communication, presentation, facilitation, coordination, and organizational skills.
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Word and PowerPoint and experience with Adobe Acrobat.
  • Experience with Articulate Storyline 3 is an asset.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience supporting technical, trades, utility, engineering, or operational training environments.
  • Experience creating digital learning assets and instructional videos.
  • Experience establishing curriculum standards and templates.
  • Experience converting classroom-based training to virtual or blended learning.
  • Experience mentoring or providing guidance to junior instructional designers.
