Job Title: Band Saw Operator
Job Description
The Band Saw Operator primarily runs a vertical band saw to perform angle cuts on structural steel while also handling materials, assisting the welding team, operating a sit-down forklift, and performing general cleanup duties. The position serves as a stepping stone into other facility roles and requires the ability to read prints and bills of material to accurately cut and process metal components.
Responsibilities
- Operate a vertical band saw for approximately 80% of the workday to perform angle cuts on structural steel components such as C channel, I-beam, and other steel objects.
- Read and interpret blueprints, prints, and bills of material to determine correct measurements, angles, and cutting requirements.
- Handle and move pipe, raw metal, and finished product throughout the facility using appropriate material handling methods and equipment.
- Use jib cranes to safely lift, position, and move heavy steel objects and structural components.
- Drive and operate a sit-down forklift to transport materials and products within the production area.
- Support the welding and machining teams by preparing materials, staging work, and ensuring components are cut and available as needed.
- Perform general cleanup duties on the production floor to maintain a safe, organized, and efficient work environment.
- Track materials and maintain accurate records to ensure proper identification, location, and usage of metal and pipe inventory.
- Lift and move heavy items, up to 50 pounds, in a safe and controlled manner as part of daily tasks.
- Organize work areas, tools, and materials to support efficient production workflows and minimize downtime.
- Follow all safety procedures and guidelines related to power tools, band saw operation, forklifts, cranes, and material handling equipment.
Essential Skills
- At least 2 years of experience operating a band saw in a production or industrial environment.
- Hands-on experience with metal and pipe cutting, including working with structural steel such as C channel and I-beam.
- Proficiency in general machine operation and safe use of power tools in a production setting.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, prints, and bills of material to perform accurate cuts and material preparation.
- Demonstrated material handling and tracking skills, including organizing and moving raw metal and finished products.
- Capability to perform heavy lifting up to 50 pounds on a regular basis.
- Strong organizational skills to maintain an orderly work area and support efficient workflow.
- Attention to detail and ability to work safely around saws, cranes, forklifts, and other industrial equipment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience operating a sit-down forklift in a shop or warehouse environment.
- Quality control experience in a manufacturing or production setting.
- Alberta overhead crane ticket.
- Alberta forklift ticket.

Work Environment
The role is based in a production shop located in southeast Calgary. The position follows a day shift schedule, Monday to Friday from 6:30 . to 3:00 ., with overtime available after 8 hours in any day. The shop environment is industrial and hands-on, requiring comfort with heavy materials, power tools, and active movement throughout the day.
