Job Details

The Durham District School Board acknowledges that many Indigenous Nations have longstanding relationships, both historic and modern, with the territories upon which our school board and schools are located. Today, this area is home to many Indigenous peoples from across Turtle Island. We acknowledge that the Durham Region forms a part of the traditional and treaty territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation, the Mississauga Peoples and the treaty territory of the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation. It is on these ancestral and treaty lands that we teach, live and learn.

This statement was co-created in partnership with the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation and the Chippewas of Georgina Island.

The multi-lingual Languages Program Client Counsellor is responsible for the planning, coordination, delivery, and evaluation of community engagement and support of eligible newcomer learners.

Responsibilities:

Working with all DCE staff and assisting with learner recruitment, intake, monitoring and community engagement processes.

Learner monitoring, multi-lingual consultations, and referrals to community partner agencies, multi-lingual curriculum development and community outreach. Identifying relevant classroom presentation topics and recruiting speakers; working with speakers to create Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) level-appropriate presentation slides and resource handouts; engage with community partners to assess client needs; build ongoing relationships with community partner agencies.

Developing strategic outreach and partnerships to increase program awareness.

Monthly administrative duties such as completing narrative reports and collaborating with the non-credit program supervisor to prepare reports required by Ministry funders.

Qualifications:

Relevant post-secondary education required.

Minimum of three years' experience in community outreach initiatives, partnership building and coordinating events, presentations or workshops.

Knowledge of local community services and referral processes.

Oral and written fluency in multiple languages common to newcomer population preferable.

Knowledge of adult education and language training programs; knowledge of provincially and federally funded programming and community partnerships.

Participation in community partner agency meetings (in-person and/or virtual).

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and online meeting platforms.

Sensitivity and understanding of working with persons of diverse cultural backgrounds.

Travel between Oshawa and Pickering locations throughout the work day and access to reliable transportation will be necessary.
