Seeking Kind & Engaging Companion/Carer (First Language English Speaker) Personal Development Worker for Ryan in Dundee

We are recruiting Personal Development Worker’s for Ryan. This is an exciting opportunity to be a part of supporting Ryan to live his good life as he has recently transitioned from living in hospital to his own home.

We are looking for a warm, reliable, and empathetic personal development worker to work for Ryan. The role involves supporting someone living at home, ensuring they feel safe, stimulated, and independent.

Why we are recruiting for someone who speaks English as a first language

Ryan is a young man with both receptive and expressive communication difficulties. Due to Ryan’s significant communication difficulties, it is a necessary requirement for his safety and well-being that Ryan’s carer has English as a first language. The role requires strong verbal communication and being able to understand subtle verbal and non-verbal cues and nuances, idioms, and emotional needs. This requirement is a justified adjustment under the Equality Act to ensure the person we work for can communicate effectively and safely.

Key Responsibilities:

• Companionship: Engaging in conversation, using AAC and other computer applications, and hobbies.
• Personal Care: Assisting with washing, dressing, and personal hygiene.
• Home Support: Light housekeeping, cooking nutritious meals, gardening and shopping.
• Community Involvement: Accompanying to appointments or social outings / therapy sessions.

Requirements:

• Essential: Male applicants only Schedule 9 Part 1 (a) of the Equality Act applies.
• Essential: First language or bilingual English fluency.
• Essential: Gentle, patient, and empathetic personality.
• Essential: A clear PVG check.
• Desirable: Previous experience in care, particularly with individuals with autism / learning disability, but right values are more important.
• Desirable: Driving License

The Vacancy

You will be working for Ryan so let’s tell you a bit about him - The most important people in Ryan’s life are his mum Irene, dad Paul and sister Celena. Ryan has other family that he has lost regular contact with whilst he has been in hospital and reconnecting with them will be an important part of his transition to living in his new home.

Those who know and love Ryan would describe him as being shy at first but that he quickly opens up to those that he trusts. At this point his rich personality and wonderful sense of humour comes through and he enjoys being around others doing the things that he loves.

One of Ryan's biggest passions is his music. Ryan plays both the drums and electric keyboard and would love to explore more ways that he can involve music in his life as he has now moved into his new home.

Ryan loves going swimming, whether it be in pools with rapid rivers and wave machines or enjoying diving for sinkers in a quieter pool. Ryan is active and has a trampoline in his garden. Ryan enjoys full body- movement exercise and the wind blowing in his face.

Ryan adores places like big shopping centres with high ceilings and atriums, as well as visiting cinemas to watch the latest DC and Marvel action movies. Would you love to do these things alongside him?

Ryan has a Motability car and is a keen traveller. Transitioning to the community from hospital he would love to be able to travel further afield and enjoy days out in places like Edinburgh. A Personal Development Worker for Ryan would ideally be a driver, but he also has a C card, so this is desirable but not essential.

Technology is very important to Ryan. He enjoys and finds comfort in planning out journeys using Google Maps. His iPad and games consoles are also a big part of his life and Ryan will be grateful of support to keep devices charged, updated, and functioning properly. Ryan’s verbal communication is supplemented through the use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) technology, specifically the Proloquo2go app.

As Ryan has recently moved into his first home, he will be looking for assistance with everyday living skills such as housekeeping (bed making, laundry, cleaning) and developing confidence to be involved in these tasks himself.

Due Ryan’s health and dietary needs, some basic cooking skills are necessary to help him prepare suitable meals. When supporting Ryan’s, his team may need to adjust their own meal choices to best support Ryan.

Ryan’s team support him one-to-one for 24 hours both daytime and nighttime (sleepover) sleepover.

The perfect candidate to work for Ryan

This is no normal, generic, social care role, we are looking for the most suitable candidates who share interests and values with Ryan, to enable him to live his Good Life.

Previous experience working in social care with people with a learning disability / autism is not essential but may be a useful skill.

It is important for Ryan and his family that his Personal Development Workers care gently and implement a low arousal approach to the support they offer him.

Contract and Salary Information

Contracts will be offered up to 32 hours per week for daytime support hours.

Sleepovers, between the hours of 11pm-7am, at paid at £12.60 per hour. Sleepover hours are paid in addition to contracted hours.
