Unit Summary

Hamilton Health Sciences’ Burn Program, based at Hamilton General Hospital, is one of only two provincially designated adult burn centres in Ontario. As one of the two centres responsible for providing definitive adult burn care across the province, HHS carries significant system-level responsibility to deliver services that meet nationally and internationally recognized standards. The program is a core component of HHS’s tertiary and quaternary service mandate, supporting burn care for patients across the Ontario West Region. Staffed by a multidisciplinary team, the Burn Centre provides high‑quality care throughout the entire burn trajectory—from resuscitation through to outpatient follow‑up—caring for more than 200 inpatients and 2,800 outpatients annually.

Position Summary

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) for Burn Service at the Hamilton General Hospital is registered with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) in the Extended Class-adult, and will work within the scope of practice of the RN-EC provided by the CNO. Collaborating with the interprofessional team members and using a patient and family centered model of care, the NP is responsible to: Provide direct patient care, including assessment and treatment of burn patients, coordination of care, discharge planning, clinic follow-up and reassessment, and the coordination of related community and other resources for this patient population; tutor and mentor nursing and other health professional students as appropriate and participate in continuing education activities to integrate the role of the NP in the program and academic settings; initiate, participate and / or lead programs, presentations, publications, evaluations, research initiatives and other system changes to continue the enhancement of interprofessional teams and quality care. The NP will work in partnership with surgeons, the burn service, consultants, nursing and other members of the health care team to provide comprehensive medical assessment, management and education.

Schedule Work Hours

Monday to Friday, days - evenings and weekends as required for operational demands.

Qualifications

1. Current Certification of Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class RN(EC) - Adult
2. Completion of a Post-Master's of Nursing - Nurse Practitioner program with a focus in Acute care for Adults
3. Minimum of five (5) years recent clinical experience supporting a population of burn patients or relevant experience
4. Demonstrated experience in research and program development
5. Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and competency to work within interprofessional teams
6. Demonstrated leadership and critical thinking skills
7. Experience and ability to lead and facilitate the development and implementation of basic and advanced education programs for patients, families, staff and other professionals
8. Experience in providing leadership in the development and implementation of policies and best practice guidelines
9. Experience in the development and maintenance of medical directives
10. Demonstrated ability for independent action, initiative, problem solving, critical thinking, organization and prioritization
11. Demonstrated mastery of effective communication with patients, families, coworkers, both written and verbal
12. Demonstrated ability to work in a consultative role with the members of the interprofessional team
13. Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adapt positively to constantly changing clinical situations
14. Demonstrated ability to promote professional development in nursing
15. Eligible for cross appointment with McMaster University School of Nursing at the undergraduate and graduate level
