Overview

Respite Disability Services Worker, Casual role at Taproot Community Support Services. Taproot is a 100 percent employee-owned organization through an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT). Respite Care is designed to help families and caregivers take a break from daily care responsibilities. It helps prevent or delay costly out-of-home placements and keeps families safe and stable.

Respite care involves supporting an active male with challenging behaviors to help him succeed within his home community. The respite care takes place in the person’s home in Slave Lake, Alberta. The role reports to the Team Leader.

Responsibilities

  • Support individuals with household chores, life skills, and personal hygiene (if needed).
  • Provide supports as per the individual’s care plan.
  • Provide immediate support in crisis situations and use de-escalation techniques to address behaviours.
  • Administer medication and perform first aid if necessary.
  • Maintain objective daily reports and document notes and observations using the computer program.
  • A complete and detailed list of key responsibilities can be provided at the time of interview.
  • Before confirmation of employment, provide a copy of a current Criminal Record Check and / or Government Screening Letter (checks vary by province and sector; details will be communicated by the Program Hiring Team).

Qualifications

  • Minimum Grade 12 or Diploma / Degree in Disabilities Studies, Social Work, Human Services, Special Education or equivalent.
  • MANDATORY - One (1) year experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities and complex needs.
  • MANDATORY - A valid Class 5 Driver License with clear driving abstract and reliable transportation.
  • Clear criminal record check and social services involvement check.
  • A positive attitude and belief that persons with disabilities have the right to define and pursue their life choices and participate in the community.
  • Skills in assisting individuals in anger management, daily living, self-help, etc.
  • First Aid / CPR Certification.
  • Crisis Prevention Intervention, Medication Administration, Abuse Protocol, Proactive Procedures and Behavioural Strategies, Foundations and Disabilities Training.
  • Knowledge of basic health and safety rules and guidelines for personal health and safety.
  • Scheduling

    No guaranteed weekly hours or schedule. Availability for shifts such as 1700 Friday through 0900 Monday or 1700-0900 weekdays (16 hours). Casual / On Call to provide respite and cover for staff illness, LOA, vacation, etc., in this 24-hour / 7-day program.
