Position Summary

Join the Peter Munk Cardiac Centre AI Team, which unites scientists and clinicians across UHN to develop and implement safe and responsible AI applications aimed at advancing healthcare. In this role, you will collaborate closely with care providers, researchers, and students to deepen expertise and pioneer AI and machine learning (ML) methods for research and clinical application. As a Machine Learning Engineer, you will create sophisticated ML software solutions and methodologies targeting high-priority initiatives, using cutting-edge AI technology within the cardiac domain. You will work under the guidance of the Chief AI Scientist to apply AI techniques in addressing complex questions involving genomic and proteomic data. Key responsibilities include spearheading AI initiatives in computational biology and precision medicine.

Duties

  • Develop and apply advanced AI / ML techniques to complex research problems in genomics and precision medicine.
  • Architect, develop, optimize, and manage the deployment of AI functionalities across multiple projects.
  • Clearly interpret and communicate technical results and methods; engage effectively across various teams.
  • Provide technical expertise for program management and support business development activities, including grant proposal writing.
  • Research and implement cutting-edge AI algorithms and tools.
  • Design and execute ML applications tailored to specific requirements.
  • Select suitable datasets and data representation methods for genomic analysis.
  • Conduct ML tests and experiments, including evaluation in post-production scenarios.
  • Maintain and enhance ML libraries and frameworks.
  • Stay updated with the latest trends in ML and AI; lead knowledge sharing within the community.
  • Mentor and develop junior staff and support training initiatives for UHN staff interested in ML applications.
  • Foster open, collaborative relationships between PMCC AI and the UHN AI Hub.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation, set high performance standards, and drive results.
  • Lead and supervise team members as required.

Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree required; PhD advantageous, in Machine Learning, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Strong communication skills and a collaborative approach to solving complex problems.
  • Proficiency in Python (, scikit-learn, Pandas) and deep learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch).
  • Experience with genomic data management and analysis in healthcare settings.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor and collaborate with clinical professionals.
