The successful applicant will work as part of the EPSRC project s C h OOL YARD : Outdoor thermal comfort models for children. The project involves four UK universities and seven industry partners, aiming to develop models and guidelines that ensure outdoor school spaces provide optimal thermal comfort for children, reflecting their thermal state, preferences and expectations, and are resilient to climate change.

Responsibilities

• Conduct microclimate simulations using computational fluid dynamics and dynamic thermal modelling to assess how playground physical parameters and microclimate impact children’s thermal comfort.
• Evaluate the potential impact of different climate‑change scenarios on the thermal performance of outdoor school environments.
• Contribute to data collection in case‑study schools for model calibration.
• Develop design studies based on survey data, laboratory results and simulation outputs to propose solutions.
• Model the resilience of proposed solutions using climate‑change weather data.
• Collaborate with all project partners and attend monthly progress meetings.
