Position - Shift Resident Care Worker (CASUAL)

Job Description Summary

The Shift Resident Care Worker is primarily responsible for addressing the personal needs of the residents care and safety during nights, evenings, and weekends. The Staff Member will ensure regular inspections of the house and grounds are conducted and any adverse situations are dealt with in an effective manner. The Staff Member is responsible to react to any potential emergency medical, property or security matter as directed by the policies outlined by Talbot House. The Shift Resident Care Worker is responsible to dispense medications to residents as directed.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure the resident's immediate personal needs are met.
  • Report any adverse situation as outlined by policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Complete the daily log notations.
  • Attend all staff meetings (where possible) and be familiar with the philosophy, policies and procedures of Talbot House.
  • Encourage good resident morale and ensure an atmosphere that is warm, positive, home-like, and respectful.
  • Use effective crisis intervention techniques so as to assess, establish priorities, and intervene appropriately.
  • Ensure that residents adhere to their medication schedule; record dosages.
  • Observe signs of illness and take appropriate action when required.
  • Inform Director and Household and Property Coordinator of any fire and safety issues or incident reports (e.g. Injury, a major behaviour change in a resident).
  • Complete the Weekend / Evening Duty sheet which includes a regular walk through of the Centre; log any problems (e.g. plumbing, electrical) and take appropriate action.
  • Socialize with residents as appropriate opportunities arise.
  • Ensure that the residents are up and dressed at the appropriate hour.

Education, Qualifications & Experience

  • Some knowledge of substance abuse recovery programs
  • Demonstrated ability to react to crisis situations in a calm and appropriate manner ensuring the safety of the residents and staff.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate efficiently, both verbally and in writing.
  • A spirit of genuineness and an ability to establish a relationship of trust and understanding of the process of healing.
  • Good time management and organizational skills.
  • Flexibility with work schedules.
  • Ability to work independently and within a team framework.
