Detailed Overview

The Clinical Instructor/Educator, Radiological Technology practices in accordance with the standards of professional practice as well as utilizing a client and family centered care model and the vision and values of the department within Fraser Health (FH).

The Clinical Instructor/Educator works in a team-based environment and is responsible for coordinating training activities for Radiological Technology students/staff within Medical Imaging. Duties include instructing students/staff in technical and diagnostic procedures, implementing an evaluation system to evaluate student progress during clinical training, acting as a liaison between academic institutions and departmental personnel, maintaining various training records and manuals, and performing technical functions when required.

Responsibilities

  1. Coordinates student/staff training activities within Medical Imaging by assigning rotation through various areas, determining goals and objectives within each rotation, developing checklists for training tasks and liaising with designated staff to discuss training requirements/schedules to ensure proper exposure to all clinical areas in accordance with the requirements of the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists’ (CAMRT) record of clinical experience. Prepares and maintains rotation schedules utilizing word processing and spreadsheet software.
  2. Instructs students/staff in technical and diagnostic procedures related to Medical Imaging and Image Guided Therapy by performing duties such as coordinating lecture series, identifying topics in accordance with curriculum guidelines, developing presentations, providing didactic practicum course content material and/or arranging for guest lecturers, demonstrating procedures in classroom or at designated work station, observing students/staff while performing techniques and providing feedback to ensure techniques are performed according to departmental standards and radiation safety procedures are followed.
  3. Evaluates student/staff progress during clinical training by implementing an evaluation system, setting up evaluation criteria for specified tasks, determining successful completion of tasks, and providing feedback to ensure training goals and objectives are met. Assists students/staff to meet evaluation standards by providing counseling and guidance in matters related to education and study skills, and developing remedial training programs. Evaluates student didactic exams. Maintains student/staff records including evaluations/progress reports, examination results, grade assessments, clinical competency tests and attendance information.
  4. Assists in the development and implementation of orientation programs by liaising with Operations Director/Manager, Site Coordinator and Supervisor to determine requirements and recommendations, creating orientation checklists for new students/staff, compiling information packages to ensure students are familiar with departmental policies, procedures and standards of practice and distributing them as appropriate. Provides orientation for new students/staff by performing duties such as discussing expectations to ensure students are familiar with departmental policies and procedures and radiation safety standards.
  5. Acts as a liaison between various personnel including departmental supervisors, radiologists, students, and other staff regarding the training program by performing duties such as communicating to receive and provide information regarding student/staff progress reports and departmental concerns or requirements. Provides in-services and updates to staff regarding student training initiatives and use/completion of clinical evaluation process.
  6. Liaises with external agencies such as academic institutions and CAMRT regarding training initiatives and student/staff progress by performing duties such as providing student/staff progress reports, and attending clinical working committees/liaison meetings to gather information to ensure practicum course content reflects the most recent changes in practices, procedures and technological advances. Participates on professional and academic committees as directed.
  7. Participates in the selection of students for the training program year through methods such as attending panel interviews, evaluating applications, conducting competency assessments and by providing input and/or recommendations to affect the best decision for selection. Completes applicable documentation.
  8. Maintains awareness of current developments in Medical Imaging and Image Guided Therapy theory and practice, related equipment, and training requirements/accreditation standards by reviewing and evaluating technical literature/material such as journals, videos, publications, CAMRT Syllabus, and Allied Medical Education Program, consulting with other Clinical Instructors, attending seminars/lectures, continuing education programs and training courses, and identifying new theories/trends/programs including new or revised procedures/equipment to ensure that information/material provided in teaching sessions is accurate, current and complete. Maintains various manuals on information such as technical procedures, imaging equipment, training requirements/accreditation standards, and orientation.
  9. Supports with the introduction and ongoing development of new skills/procedure development, revisions and implementation based on best practice. Arranges and presents in-service sessions as required to respond to the learning needs. Maintains clinical competency and performs technical work when required by positioning patients, explaining procedures, correlating clinical history with examination to be performed, operating imaging equipment in accordance with established standards and procedures, checking technical results to ensure departmental standards are maintained, and entering required patient data into the radiology information system; monitors patient during procedures by observing and responding to emergent situations in accordance with facility policies and procedures; may be required to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation in the event of an emergency.
  10. Maintains inventories of teaching supplies by checking supplies are in stock and ordering supplies when necessary to meet operational needs. Reviews usage, monitors cost effectiveness and makes recommendations to Operations Director/Manager and/or Supervisor/Site Coordinator regarding additions or deletions to reorder points. Compiles statistical information such as usage, patterns and costs for budgetary requirements.
  11. Ensures tidiness of medical imaging classroom through methods such as rearranging desks/chairs and notifying building services of special cleaning requirements.
  12. Participates in approved research and special projects in collaboration with Supervisor and other health care professionals.
  13. Sets measurable goals and objectives within a team or individual environment, incorporating the organization’s vision and values, goals and corporate plan, through methods such as maintaining and updating own knowledge of clinical and professional development within area of practice, and developing plan in collaboration with Operations Director/Manager and Supervisor/Site Coordinator for professional development; reviews progress to ensure goals are achieved within established time frames.
  14. Performs other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience

Certification with the CAMRT. A minimum of five years’ recent, related experience in the designated medical imaging modality including one year’s experience in a supervisory or teaching capacity supplemented by successful completion of recognized clinical instruction courses or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated knowledge of theory and practice for general medical imaging and interventional procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and practice of safe work procedures with medical imaging equipment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Picture Archiving and Communications Systems (PACS), i.e. digital imaging, image archiving and retrieval.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with co-workers, medical personnel, other health care staff and students, both one-to-one and in-groups.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop training manuals, instructional material, examinations and assignments.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and train staff and students.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and to establish workload priorities in collaboration with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to problem solve.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in collaboration with others.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement training plans.
  • Demonstrated ability in CPR techniques.
  • Demonstrated continuous education pathway.
  • Skill in the use of equipment, and in techniques appropriate to area of specialty.
  • Computer literacy with word processing, spreadsheet and database skills.
  • Physical ability to perform the duties of the job.
