Our client, The Master Group, is Canada’s leading private distributor of HVAC-R products and one of the largest players in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration industry in North America. Master provides solutions to customers across the residential, commercial, institutional, and industrial sectors. The Master Group employs more than 1,400 people and serves its customers through a network of over 85 branches and four distribution centers across North America, including Canada and the United States.

To support the continued growth of its business divisions and better address their evolving needs, the company is establishing a new permanent Legal Counsel position within its Legal Affairs team.

Reporting to the Vice President, Legal Affairs and Corporate Secretary, you will spend the majority of your time actively participating in the strategic management of litigation, claims, and liability matters. You will be involved in negotiations arising from differing interpretations of construction-related contracts, as well as matters concerning manufacturer liability and consumer disputes. You will advise relevant business units during negotiations, develop case strategies, and handle claims.

In the event of litigation, you will document and manage the case file and gather relevant facts to support the work of external counsel and inform and guide the case strategy. You will also equip internal teams to handle small claims matters, with a focus on operational efficiency and cost control.

Another part of your role will be dedicated to intellectual property, including responsibility for monitoring trademarks and supporting the marketing team on their initiatives such as contests, advertising campaigns, and other activities, with an emphasis on regulatory compliance and brand protection.

If you have 4 to 7 years of litigation experience, are bilingual, and recognize the business importance of solution-oriented approaches, even in the context of disputes, we would like to hear from you. Experience in consumer law, construction litigation, or insurance will be considered an asset, as will experience working in a corporate environment in close collaboration with business teams. The position is hybrid, with a minimum of two days per week in the office. Ref.: #34071
