The School of Public Health integrates research, graduate education, and community engagement to improve population health. Its interdisciplinary structure includes academic programs, centres, and research teams focused on tackling pressing public health issues locally and globally. The School is dedicated to creating knowledge, training public health professionals, and advancing evidence-informed policy and practice.

Job Description

This position has an initial appointment of 1 year with the possibility of extension based on funding and performance.

Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus Edmonton.

Intentional and unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for Albertans between the ages of 10 and 49. The Injury Prevention Centre (IPC) formerly the Alberta Centre for Injury Control & Research established in 1998, is a provincial organization committed to changing the beliefs, attitudes, and behaviours so that Albertans can live, work and play free from life-changing injuries. The IPC receives core funding from Alberta Health and is housed within the University of Alberta, School of Public Health.

IPC core business strategies:

Develop and amplify injury prevention programs through stakeholder engagement

Increase evidence-based practice in injury prevention through knowledge translation, education, and evaluation

Promote awareness about the issue of injury

Address major causes of injury mortality and morbidity

Examine and address new emerging injury issues

As part of the School of Public Health, the Centre also has a goal to educate graduate students in the MPH, MACE, MSc & PhD programs of the School.

The Associate Director is charged with providing strategic and operational leadership to the Centre with a specific priority to foster initiatives in the field of injury prevention. Reporting directly to the Dean of the School of Public Health and working collaboratively with the Scientific Director and the IPC Staff team of approximately 7 people, the focus of the role is to meet the mission of IPC to contribute to a reduction in mortality, morbidity and overall burden of injury in Alberta.

The role also focuses on nurturing community initiatives and external relationships, and supporting communications and fundraising activities.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and leading a nationally recognized injury prevention program
  • Identify, assess and implement a plan to address internal and external issues affecting the Centre
  • Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operations of the organization, including managing Centre staff
  • Developing the profile and reputation of IPC as an expert in Injury Prevention
  • Promoting the Centre’s programs to potential sponsors
  • Represent the Centre, School, and University at international, national, and provincial events to enhance the Centre’s profile, often meeting with senior officials in provincial ministries responsible for health, transportation, and education as well as representatives of federal ministries
  • Developing, defining and communicating the vision and strategy for IPC, identifying the actions and outputs required
  • Act as a spokesperson for the Centre, School of Public Health and University of Alberta, on matters relating to injury prevention, with all levels and forms of media
  • Develop an operational plan that incorporates goals and objectives that work towards the strategic direction of the organization, and provide leadership within the scope of the Centre’s business plan to ensure efficient and effective operations and programs
  • Draft policies and prepare procedures to implement the organizational policies, review existing policies and recommend changes where needed
  • Ensuring that qualitative and quantitative information are critical inputs into decision making
  • Develop and deliver conference presentations on Centre programs and initiatives (provincial, national and international)
  • Develop and deliver briefing notes and presentations to government ministries and government standing committees, federal and provincial
  • Developing and maintaining sound relationships with all stakeholders, including cross-government agencies, health corridors and agencies, and not-for-profit and non-governmental agencies and organizations
  • Promote the Centre and healthy public policy related to injury within the political arena
  • Conduct official correspondence on behalf of the Centre as appropriate such as federal and provincial government ministers, senior level bureaucrats, and stakeholders
  • Participate in the Canadian Collaborative on Injury Prevention to network with other provincial and national colleagues and to keep abreast of new developments in injury prevention
  • Seek partnerships and alliances for new projects
  • Communicate with stakeholders and keep them informed of the work of the Centre, and act as a resource for injury prevention information
  • Provide advice to research and community projects

Qualifications

  • Ideal candidate would possess a Master of Public Health (MPH) or equivalent with a background in injury prevention and/or health promotion
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in management, and leading a team in a complex and demanding environment
  • Knowledge of injury prevention, program implementation and evaluation
  • Knowledge of marketing practices would be beneficial
  • Knowledge and understanding of UofA financial and human resource procedures, policies and agreements is an asset
  • Experience of high-level relationship management and negotiation
  • Superior communications, project management, grant writing and presentation skills
  • Promotes, advocates and displays standards of behaviour consistent with IPC, School of Public Health, and UofA’s values
  • Outcome-focused and results-oriented with strong process skills
  • Demonstrates high-level analytical, conceptual and innovative thinking
  • Experience in program development, management and evaluation, preferably in injury prevention
  • Understanding of knowledge translation and its connection to program development
  • Consistently takes into account and foresees the implications of important economic, social and political developments
  • Ability to assimilate complex information and concepts, critically analysing and distilling the key issues and making effective decisions

This position offers a comprehensive benefits package with an annual salary range of $92,312 to $126,931.

The terms and conditions of this appointment are governed by Schedule E of the Collective Agreement between the Board of Governors of the University of Alberta and the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta.
